Carpenter, who is now living a retired life, in Stratford, was born in Madison County, New York, in 1825 and is a brother of Hiram Carpenter, of Webster City, who is represented on another page of this work. In the district schools the subject of this review pursued his education. He came to Iowa in 1865, settling first at Boonesboro, where he engaged in clerking in a hardware store for a year and a half. He then built a home of his own and became interested in the furniture business, but subsequently sold that in order to engage in the grocery business at Moingona. After a short time, however, he removed his stock at the latter place to Hook's Point and with his partner, B. C. Dixon, opened a general store there, continuing at that place for eight or nine years, during which time he served as postmaster under General Grant. After the railroad scheme became known to the general public Mr. Carpenter became engaged in making railroad ties, manufacturing many thousand, but the Patrons of Husbandry, an organization opposed to railroads and monopolies, so worked against the railroad that the plan of extending the line was abandoned and thus the firm of Carpenter & Dixon, engaged in the manufacture of ties, became bankrupt, losing all they had with the exception of their homes. They had made over seven thousand dollars worth of ties, had operated a sawmill, employed laborers and had otherwise invested time and capital, so that the abandonment of the project came to them as a terrible blow. Mr. Carpenter afterward worked in a wagon shop as a partner of S. J. Berggren, who had established the business, and two years later, when Stratford was started, Mr. Carpenter came to this place. Here he followed the carpenter's trade and later he acquired forty acres of land, which he subsequently traded for a building in Stratford in which he opened a stock of furniture and thus became connected with the mercantile interests of the city. He had carried on a successful business for a little more than two years, when he lost all of his store and its contents by fire, about eight hundred dollars going up in smoke within a few minutes. He then disposed of his salvage at a special sale and closed up the business. Since that time he has devoted the greater part of his attention to building and clerking, although at the present time he is living retired. At the time of the Civil War Mr. Carpenter enlisted in Madison County, New York, as a member of Company K, One Hundred and Fourteenth New York Infantry, and served for about two years, with the Department of the Gulf, under General Banks. He went to New Orleans from Fortress Monroe at the time General Banks relieved General Butler, and was engaged in the siege of Port Hudson for forty-one days, at the time Grant was at Vicksburg. He participated in the battle near Franklin, Louisiana, and in a number of skirmishes and was mustered out at New Orleans and returned to New York City. He had been promoted to the rank of second lieutenant and afterward to that of first lieutenant, and on account of failing health he was honorably discharged after about two years of service. He was a faithful officer, loyal and true to the cause of the Union, and deserves to be remembered with gratitude as one of the brave boys in blue who fought so nobly for the defense of the undivided country. Before going to the war Mr. Carpenter was married on the 28th of September, 1852, in Otsego County, New York, to Eliza B. Robinson, a native of that county, and they resided upon a farm in Madison County until they came to the west. They have an adopted daughter, Anna C, who became a member of their household at the age of eighteen months and is now the wife of J. F. Coleman, of Dayton. Mrs. Carpenter has one sister, Mrs. Dixon, who now resides in North Platte, Nebraska. Her father, John Robinson, was of the sixth generation from ancestry that can be traced back to November 9, 1669. He was a farmer by occupation and was born October 31, 1807. On the 31st of December, 1830, he was united in marriage to Eliza Smith, a daughter of Luther and Barbara Smith. She was born September 21, 1802, and died July 13, 1834 at Richfield, New York, after which Mr. Robinson was again married on the 2nd of January, 1835, his second union being with Rebecca Smith, a daughter of Larkin and Hannah Smith. She was born December 20, 1808, and died August 23, 1883, in West Winfield, New York, while Mr. Robinson died in the same town, on the 11th of January, 1890. He was a son of John Robinson, a soldier of the Revolutionary war. Mrs. Carpenter is a cousin of B. R. Sherman, ex-governor of Iowa. Our subject and his wife hold membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church and he is a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. In his political views he is a Republican and for a number of years has served as justice of the peace, his decisions being strictly fair and impartial. He owns a home in Stratford where he is now living in honorable retirement, having reached the age of seventy-seven years. His life has ever been an honorable and upright one, and though he has met with some reverses he has persevered in his labors and at all times has been found true and loyal to citizenship and to straightforward relations with his fellow men. Stratford Courier September 21, 1906 E.S. Carpenter Passes. E. S. Carpenter, a former resident of Stratford and one of the highly respected pioneer settlers of this community, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. F. Coleman late Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Carpenter was past ninety years of age and lived to see this country made over from a wilderness to one of the finest farming communities in the world. The funeral services will be held at Dayton at 1 o'clock this afternoon and the remains will be brought to Stratford and interred in Oakwood cemetery and a short service will be held there.
