Monday, December 4, 2006 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE. Erna L. Menninga, 87 years of age, of Beatrice, NE. passed away at the Beatrice Community Hospital in Beatrice, NE. Friday morning, December 1, 2006. She was born on September 27, 1919 in Odell, NE. to Fred and Anna (nee Riggert) Klaus. She attended rural schools near Bremen, Kansas and Odell, NE. She had worked at the Elgin Watch Company and the State Capital in Lincoln, NE. and for Dr. John Krim. in Beatrice. She and John Menninga were married on May 11, 1957 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE. One daughter, Carol Jean, was born to this union. They lived on a farm near Crab Orchard, NE., moved to a farm south of Beatrice, NE. in 1981, and then into The Villa at Flowing Springs in Beatrice in 2002. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE.; the Naomi Circle of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League of the church; former member of the church Altar Guild; former member of the Pleasant Hour Club in Crab Orchard, NE. and a craft club in Beatrice. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed crafts, flowers, and gardening. Survivors include her daughter, Carol J. Riens and husband Larry of Beatrice, NE.; grandchildren Brett Griffeth and wife Jennie of Beatrice, NE., Kristal Griffeth of Beatrice, NE., and Curtis Riens, Kelsie Riens and Kimberly Riens, all of Lincoln, NE.; sisters in law Bertha Klaus of Beatrice and Margaret Schotte of Marysville, Kansas; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Anna (Riggert) Klaus; husband John Menninga (November 2003); brothers Freddie, Martin, Herbert and Ernest Klaus; and sisters Minnie Wacker, Anna Duensing, Martha Schotte, Sophie Schotte, and Olinda Klaus. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 4, 2006 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE. with Reverend Timothy Wagner officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice, NE. The body will lie in state from 5-9:00 Saturday and 10-9:00 Sunday at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice and at the church one hour preceding the service on Monday. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. Monday at the church. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society and the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice with the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to [email protected] They will be forwarded to the family. The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice is in charge of the services.
