Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Reentz, temporary pastor of Neligh officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Merritt C. Warren, Ivan Copeland, Arthur Brune, Paul Naprstek, James Saloum and Clad Britt. Masonic and military rites were conducted at the cemetery. Business places were closed during the funeral services. American flags were flown at half mast in front of the stores Tuesday until after the rites. Mr. Jacobs was born and reared at Creighton, left for a few years upon reaching adulthood, then returned about 1929 to become associated with his parents in operating the bakery in Creighton. He continued in the business, assisted by his sister, Helen and in recent years by his sons. He became active in community organizations and projects soon after returning to Creighton. He served six years on the school board and in 1946 was elected mayor. He was re-elected seven times, being opposed only once and would have completed 16 years in that office had he lived until next spring. He has served as general chairman for Creighton's anniversary celebrations held every five years and headed the food committee year after year for the annual Farmer's Night of the Chamber of Commerce. He served several years as chairman of the local Boy Scout committee and as chairman of the local 3-man board representing the Salvation Army. He was a member of numerous organizations and was always active in assisting in any projects which they night sponsor. Mr. Jacobs was a past worshipful master of Creighton Lodge No. 100, AF&AM member of the Consistory at Yankton, S.D., Royal Arch Chapter of Norfolk and Tangler Shrine of Omaha. He was also a past worthy patron of the local chapter of Order of Easter Star, first commander of Creighton American Legion Post No. 74, charter member of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce and a 20 year member and past president of the Creighton Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Jacobs was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton. Ernest E. Jacobs was born at Creighton on Feb. 27, 1896, a son of Oliver and Anna Jacobs. He attended Creighton High School and later was graduated from the Dunwoody School of Baking at Minneapolis, Minn. He went to Chicago, Ill. to take charge of a bakery in a large department store. It was while there that he met Jeanette Eleanor Spencer. They were married in Chicago on Sept. 4, 1926. They moved to Denver, Colo. for about a year, which was the only time in his life he was not engaged in the baking business. In 1929 they came to Creighton, where they have since resided. Three sons were born to them. Gordon and Ernest Jr. are now in San Diego, Calif. and Robert, the youngest, is at home and assisting at the bakery. The two older boys also worked at the bakery for a time before leaving Creighton. All three have military service. Mr. Jacobs served in the Navy aboard ship during WWI. Surviving, besides Mrs. Jacobs and sons, is one sister, Helen Jacobs of Creighton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Adolph. Jacobs Bakery is the oldest business in Creighton with continuous family ownership. It was established by Oliver and Anna Jacobs in 1894. For several years the bakery was operated in conjunction with a restaurant. Later the restaurant was discontinued and a stock of groceries added. Following the death of their parents, ownership went to Ernest and Helen Jacobs. It will continue to be operated by the Jacobs family with Robert continuing in charge of the baking and his aunt, Helen, in charge of the retail phase.
