He started school in Guilford. In 1925, at the age of 13, he moved to Colorado to a farm northwest of Holyoke with his parents and continued his schooling at the Fairfield High School. On January 1, 1943, he was united in marriage to Frances L. O'Mara in Lawton, OK. To this union one son, Dennis A. Oliver was born. Ernest loved the soil and he spent his entire life in the farming industry except for the three and one-half years that he served in the United States Army. He was a devoted husband and father. In 1976, he retired and moved to Holyoke. Ernest was a member of the First Methodist Church of Holyoke, Masonic Lodge #81 of Holyoke, Consistory #1 of Denver, El Jebelle Shrine of Denver, American Legion of Holyoke, Elks Lodge of Sterling and was past president of the Phillips County School Board. Survivors include his wife Frances Oliver of Holyoke, a son Dennis A. Oliver of Holyoke and Denver, a sister Doris Abbey of Holyoke, nephews Larry Abbey and William G. Oliver, wife Donna and family and niece Vonnell Lewis and boys. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Maynard. Ernest passed away Thursday June 20 at Presbyterian Hospital in Denver following open heart surgery at the age of 74 years. Funeral services were held Monday, June 24, 1985 at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Holyoke with Rev. Scott Hood officiating with burial following in the Holyoke Memorial Park.
