Description	:	Ernest was born in Eskjo, Sweden. He came to the United States as a very young man at the age of 9 with his family, they landed in New York, New York April 24, 1893. They then settled with his parents in Altona, Illinois. Later he moved South Dakota where he lived and worked for several years. he married and sometime during the year 1912 they moved to Canada, heading for the Peace River Country. He came to the United States as a very young man at the age of 9 with his family, they landed in New York, New York April 24, 1893. They then settled with his parents in Altona, Illinois. Later he moved South Dakota where he lived and worked for several years. he married and sometime during the year 1912 they moved to Canada, heading for the Peace River Country. When they arrived at Edmonton they were misled to the Mosside area instead. Ernest worked as a farmhand for about a year, then moved to the Freeman River District where he had taken up a homestead. They abandoned it in 1914 and went back to South Dakota. Within a year or two they rented a farm in Iowa and farmed it until the fall of 1926 when Ernest was stricken with polio which left him crippled. Doctors at Rochester advised him to move to a different climate and being as they wanted to come back to Canada, Canada it was. In August 1928, the family left for Freeman River visiting in North and South Dakota on the way, arriving at his brother Gust's on September 19, 1928, they lived at Gust's for about a year while a house and other buildings were being built on Ernest's new homestead which joined his brothers to the northeast. Many hard years were ahead for them with the depression and with Ernest being crippled. In 1944 Ernest bought a lot in Fort Assiniboine and moved a small house from the homestead on it. They lived there until May 1953 then moved to Barrhead to live with their son, Delbert. Ernest passed away April 2, 1961 and is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery at Fort Assiniboine. Newspaper Reads on April 1, 1961 as follows: Ernest Strand, Old Timer, Died Very Suddenly Here Mr. Ernest George Strand passed away Sunday, April 2nd, at the age of 76 years in St. Joseph's Hospital, Barrhead. Mr. Strand was born at Eksjo, Sweden, on May 21st, 1884. He came to this country with his parents in his early childhood and settled in the State of Illinois. Growing to manhood there and journeying west to South Dakota, he was married to Tillie Peterson on May 9th 1908, who predeceased him on February 8th, 1961. To this union four children were born and still live. Marlin of Fort Assiniboine, Delbert of Barrhead, Mrs. Della Carty of Eureka River, Alberta; and Mrs. Mildred Skocdopole, of Eckville. Also surviving are two sisters and one brother in Illinois, as well as eleven grand children and five great grand children. Mr. Strand was one of the early pioneers of the Mosside and Fort Assiniboine district, Coming here in 1912 and returning to South Dakota in 1914. returning to Fort Assiniboine and district in 1928 he homesteaded and lived there until 1958, when he retired to Barrhead where he lived until his demise. He was very active in community life and was a member of the Barrhead United Church. Funeral services were conducted at the Barrhead United Church at two p.m. on Wednesday, April 5th. Rev. Allan Scott officiated. Interment was in the Hill Chrest Cemetery at Fort Assiniboine. Pallbearers were Messrs. Reg Waite, Christ Matison, Harold Monson, Vincent Ryckman, Henry Vandervaate and Roy Moffman. Barrhead Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
