Death Certificate Montgomery County Court House, Red Oak, Iowa death records, book 1922-1939, page 101 DIED FROM GAS EXPLOSION HENRY HAGERMASTER, RESIDENT HERE IS FATALLY BURNED AT HIS HOME Henry Hagermaster, 80 year old resident of Villisca, died at 5 o’clock Tuesday morning from burns when a gasoline heater that he was generating exploded at the home 8 o’clock Monday morning. HIs wife, 77, sustained severe burns from the explosion, but will recover, and their residence was damaged by the fire. Mr. Hagermaster, who had started a fire in the stove which was run by pressure in the gasoline tank, and he was covered with the flames when the stove exploded. The explosion blew the windows out of the room and blew the doors open into the bedroom adjoining where Mrs. Hagermaster was still in bed. Neighbors who heard the explosion ran to the Hagermaster home and rescued Mr. and Mrs. Hagermaster, taking the former out through the west bedroom window. Mr Hagermaster’s hands were burned until the nails and flesh came off and the face was burned almost Blakeys and the arms and back were a mass of burns. A wool vest protected his chest from the flames. Mrs. Hagermaster sustained severe burns to her hands and nose. The two victims of the accident were taken to a nearby home where a physician was called and they were given preliminary treatment, afterwards they were removed to the house of their daughter, Mr. C a Stickler. Mr. Hagermaster died on the next morning from the tragedy. The furniture and woodwork in the front room of the Hagermaster home in which the gas heater was located were ruined by the fire. The fire company soon had the blaze under control with the use of their chemical equipment, though it was at first feared a hose from the fire hydrant would have to be brought into use. The loos of the furniture and residence is covered by insurance. After MR. Hagermaster’s death, the following brief account of his life, written by himself was found in his bible. Ernest Heinrich Hagermaster, Jr., now known as Henry Hagermaster, was born October 3, 1847 near Bielefeld, Westphalia, Prussia, came with his parent to America landing in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the month of January 1851, and by steamboat up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri, later moved to Nashville, Washington County, Illinois. “Enlisted in Co. H., 38th Illinois, Infantry in the Civi War, was married to Sarah Winters at Ashley, Illinois, on October 1, 1871, moved to Iowa up the Mississippi River on the Steamboat Lucy Bertram from St. Louis to Keokuk, from Keokuk to Omaha, from there to Villisca, Iowa, in September 1872.” Mr. Hagermaster was a wagon maker, and soon after his arrival here 55 years ago at the age of 25 years, he opened a shop on what is now lower Third Avenue. He mad many farm wagons which were used in this community, some spring wagons, and a few buggies, though buggies were not common then and a man who owned one was considered well-to-do. Later Mr. Hagermaster manufactured bee hives in addition to his wagons and buggies, and he continued at wood work in some form until a few years ago. When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Hagermaster was too young to enlist, but he managed to get into the service during the last year of the conflict. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the G.A.R., post and was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge organized here in 1871. Mr. Hagermaster was the father of four children who with the wife survive him. The children are Mrs. C. A. Stickler, Chas. Hagermaster, Villisca; Mrs. Flora Gooding, Horton, Kansas, and Mrs. Marie Blotcky, Des Moines. He leaves also a sister, Mrs. Mina Gerding of St. Louise, a half sister, Mrs. Catherine Tuchey of Chicago, a half brother, Ed Hagermaster of Clay Center, Kansas, 4 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Fessler & Sutphen Funeral Home, with Rev. Geo. A. Lawton in charge of the service. All the children were here for the funeral. The singing was by Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Shane, Mrs. A. F. Davie, and H. H. Nordyke, with Mrs. J. L. Wheeler at the piano. The pall bearers were Virgil Parcher, J. R. Kirk, Frank Butler, Forest Fetrow, H. M. McGee, and George Horton, and interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Villisca Review, Villisca, Iowa, Friday, November 11, 1927, page 5
