Ernest Sigurd Sandberg stepped from life to eternity on March 29, 2016 at his residence at the Kuna Living Center in Kuna ID. "Ernie" was the first-born son of Annie Ottila Lindstrom Mossberg Sandberg and Sigurd Gustav Sandberg, born on a farm near Beresford SD on February 26, 1922. As a youth, he attended Clay Point and Prairie Belle country schools in the Vermillion area through the 8th grade. He graduated from Vermillion High School in 1940 with perfect attendance for all 12 years of school. While still in school and after graduation, Ernie worked as a farmhand for neighbors, family and friends, working with crops and tending sheep and other herd animals until May of 1943 when he entered the US Army. Ernie was trained and served as a U.S. Army Intelligence and Reconnaissance scout in New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal and Bougainville, and the invasions of Leyte and Cebu in the Southern Philippine Islands, and finally served as part of the occupation army in the Tokyo - Yokohama area of Honshu Island of Japan before his discharge in 1946. In Ernie's memoires, he reported that all but one of his 11 other fellow scouts were killed, wounded, or missing in action. While serving in the Pacific Theater, he contracted malaria, a disease that plagued him for several years after. Immediately following his WW2 service in the US Army, Ernie traveled with a friend through Western United States, and fell in love with the Portland / Seattle area. He returned to Vermillion, however, where he worked as a carpenter. He loved playing baseball with his nephews, and constructed a couple of ball fields in the Hanson farm fields. Ernie loved sports of all kinds. He ran track and played football in high school, played baseball with the Vermillion ball team, bowled a decent 250 average game, and scored a hole-in-one golfing. In his later years, he followed professional football and baseball teams, especially his beloved Seattle Sea Hawks football team as well as all of the teams of the colleges and universities his nieces and nephews attended. He thrilled in attending the Rose Bowl parades with his granddaughter. In 1956 Ernie's path crossed with the path of Hazel Lillian Hinchliff Millette and they married at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion on November 26, 1956. Ernie continued to work as a carpenter in Vermillion until 1962 when he and Hazel moved to the Seattle area where he again worked as a carpenter until his retirement in 1984. In late 1987 Ernie moved to Las Vegas to be near Hazel's daughter Donna and family giving him the opportunity to be near grandchildren and great grandchildren. Though he was formally retired, he continued to work as a carpenter and cabinet maker, designing and constructing extensive cabinetry and showcases for the concessions at the Hoover Dam, remodeling family homes and other "grandpa" and "dad" jobs. Ernie was a wonderful storyteller and writer. For more than two years he wrote a weekly article for the Kuna Melba. His sisters envied his beautiful Palmer Style handwriting. His nieces really looked forward to his letters where he would reminisce on his youth and tell tales of what was currently happening in his life. His stories were rich and colorful and would make the reader feel as though they were looking at the events "real time". In 2000, at the urging of one of his nieces, he put his life story to paper and shared with his family. Following Hazel's death in 1998, Ernie moved to Kuna ID with daughter Donna's family in November 2005 where he lived until his death March 29, 2016. Ernie is preceded in death by his parents, Sigurd and Annie Sandberg; wife Hazel; sister Gunhild (and Walter) Johnson; brother Edwin Sandberg (and Eleanor); brother-in-law Paul Bousfield; stepson Norval "Buster" (and Beverly) Millette; grandchildren David and Melissa Millette; and granddaughter-in-law Judi Girard. Left to carry on his memory are daughter Madonna "Donna" (Don) Girard of Kuna ID; grandsons Kurt Girard of Star ID, Kevin Girard of Las Vegas NV, Daniel Millette of Anderson CA, and granddaughters Kim (Stan) McClain of Sequim WA and Michelle Millette of Anderson CA; 5 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; sisters Gladys (Burdette) Hanson of Elk Point SD and Mary Ann Bousfield of Ft. Dodge IA; and several nieces and nephews.
