Read More	Source: Stanton Register June 29, 1944 Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Gemelke was the son of Heinrich Gemelke and his wife Sophia (nee Janecke). He was born on January 18, 1888 at Hainhaus, near Bissendorf, Province. Hanover, Germany. As an infant, he was dedicated to the Lord through holy baptism in the German Lutheran church at Bissendorf. Here too he was confirmed in 1902. For two years after, he continued to receive religious instruction. He began training as an apprentice in the hotel business in Germany, but in 1904 he came to America, to join his sister, Mrs. Alwine Leseberg who lived near Altona, Nebraska, having also come from Germany two years earlier. He now worked on various farms, first near Altona and then near Pilger, for Henry Koehlmoos Sr. All this time, he was affiliated with the Trinity Lutheran church of Altona. In 1911, he was joined in holy wedlock with Miss Louise Koehlmoos by Pastor Frederick Schaller of Trinity Lutheran church of Altona. He now made his home with his bride on a farm 2 1/2 miles north of Pilger. Soon after he acquired the quarter section directly west of here, where he built the home which the family used until the time of his death. The Lord blessed their home with seven children, all of whom survive their father. Mr. Gemelke was very active in organizing a church of the pure word of God in Pilger. His efforts and persistence, joined with that of some of his relatives and friends, begun in 1911. finally in 1915 led to the organizing of St. Johns Evangelical church (UAC) of Pilger, Nebraska. He was the first one to sign the constitution among the nine charter members. He was also chosen as the first secretary of the congregation. In this capacity he served the congregation until 1931, when he was elected as an elder of the congregation. This important office he held until the time of his death. He was also the able chairman of the meetings of the congregation for the last twelve years of his life. In 1928 he was chosen as one of the members of a building committee, who were to see about the building of a church building for the small congregation, of which at that time he was one of the leading members. Nothing came of those plans. In 1933, he served on a similar committee and again in 1935, when his dream of St John's having a church of its own came true. In 1933, he also served on a committee to obtain a resident pastor for his beloved St. John's church. In 1936, as first delegate to a Synodical Convention from St John's of Pilger. He signed the constitution of Synod in the name of the congregation. In recent years, he was especially active in wiping out the church debt and procuring a new parsonage. St John's of Pilger will certainly miss his unflagging interest in and consecrated work for its welfare. In all things, he showed himself an earnest, zealous Christian. He was also interested in civic and agricultural projects. The last two years Mr. Gemelke had not been feeling well at all. Still it was a great shock to his family, his church and friends, when last Saturday morning, June 24, 1944, he was stricken in Pilger, while he was fixing his tire at the filling station, with a severe heart attack, and passed to his reward in heaven. The Lord wished thus to take His servant home. He attained the age of 56 years, 5 months and 6 days and is mourned by his devoted wife. Mrs. Louise Gemelke of Pilger, his two sons, Herbert, a PFC in the military police of the U S. army stationed in Washington. D.C. and Emil at home, his 5 daughters, Gertrude (Mrs. Floyd Vollmer), of Wisner. Nebr., Willhelma (Mrs. Ivan Kemper) of Norfolk. Nebr., Anita, Viola and Mildred, all still at home, also two brothers. Friederich, still living when last heard of in Germany, and Gustav of Pilger, also two sisters. Alwine, (Mrs. Leseberg) of Canyon. Texas and Ella (Mrs. Siemsglusz) of Norfolk, Nebr., also one granddaughter, Gloria Vollmer. His parents and one brother, Herman preceded him in death.
