Ernst Oestmann, an old and highly respected citizen of Nebmaha County, passed away Friday, October 30 [gravestone engraved as October 21], at his home in Johnson at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 26 days. Mr. Oestmann had been in failing health for several years and although his death had been anticipated for several weeks, yet his passing brings the deepest sorrow to his many friends and relatives in this community. The deceased qwas a dilligent, frugal, well-read man, a lover of nature, religious, positive in his opinions and convictions, always aiding in those things pertaining to the best in life. In particular, he was a friend of the Lutheran church, first at Hickory Grove, where he aided in the erection of two church buildings, later in the St. Matthews congregation of which he was a charter member and one of its most active leaders and supporters. Mr. Oestmann was known as a s;lendid man, and one who was held in the highest regard by all who knew him. Friends extend the full measure of their sympathy to the bereaved family. Denst Heinrich Friedrich Diedrich Oestmann, fifth child of Heinrich J. Oestmann and Sophia, nee Ehlers, was born on the parental estate Gaken Hof, near Fulda, Hanover, Germany, on September 4, 1859. He was baptized in the Lutheran church of his community and received a public school education. At the age of 14 years, at Walsrode, the diocesan seat to which Fulda belonged, he was confirmed. His memorial verse was Psalms 23-4, After confirmation he turned to agricultural pursuits on his father's estate. However, it was not long until he and his uncle Dietrich left the home land for America. Another uncle, Friedrich, having already settled in Nemaha County. On the way over they suffered shipwreck on the coast of England, where for two weeks they were marooned in a small fishermen's villiage. But, finally they arrived in Nemaha county and the uncle's home became the nephew's home until the latter's marriage. The two joined hands in agricultural activity and carpentry. To Mr.Oestmann's adeptness in both occupations his farms and the parsonage of St. Matthew's bear witness. The first year of his labors netted him $100 of which $50 went to the church. On October 21, 1881, Mr. Oestmann was married to Sophia C. Zabel, the daughter of one of the first settlers in this community and the young couple began building their home one the prairie one-half mile west of Rohrs and their farm place grew to be the among the most beautiful in this county. Five sons and two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Oestmann all of whom are living xcept Ferdinand who passed away in 1924, bringing great sorrow to the parents. In December, 1912, the coupld moved to Johnson to retire and bought the property which until now has been the Oestmann home. Two years later, Mr. Oestmann bought a hardware store in Johnson, NE, which he managed until 1927. In his later life the deceased bore considerable physical suffering but he bore his pain with Christian fortitude. About 2 weeks ago Mrs. and Mrs. Oestmann observed their golden wedding anniversary at which time the children gathered to be with their parens. Mr. Oestmann was also privileged to live to witness the celehration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the organization of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Wilhelmine Meyer of Elk Creek, NE. Mrs. Sophia Harms of Auburn, NE four sons, August, Albert, Herman and Richard all of Johnson community. 19 grandchildren; onw sister, Mrs. Henry Moerer, Dumont, MN; two brothers, Henry of this community and August, Pomona, CA. numerous other relatives a a host of friends. Funeral services, conducted by Fev. Duhrkop, were held at the home and at St. Matthew church, probagbly the largest crowd ever asembled in Johnson for a funeral gathered to pay their last respects to this good citizen. Interment was made in the church cemetery. The pallbearers were Justus Grube, Claus Wohlers, Conrad Harms, Fred Beckman, Henry Kuhl, Fred W. Holtgrew. There were many relatives attending from a distance. These people were also listed in his obit. (Records from County Court that o n Dec. 8, 1887, Ernst became an American Citizen) Their children were: Ferdenand Emil, August Hinrich Franz, Ernst Albert(Albert), Herman Gottfried, Helena Wilehlmine (Wilhelmine) or (Minnie), Sophia Lina, and Richard Gustav Adolph Oestmann.
