Sophia was baptized June 14, 1896 at St. Paul Hickory Grove Lutheran Church and later confirmed on March 20, 1910 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at Johnson, Ne. Read More	OBITUARY: Sophia Lina Oestmann, daughter of Ernest F and Sophia Zabel Oestmann, was born May 20, 1896 on a farm southeast of Johnson. She was one of seven children. Sophia was baptized June 14, 1896 at St. Paul Hickory Grove Lutheran Church and later confirmed on March 20, 1910 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at Johnson, Ne. She grew up in rural Johnson and attended country school near Rohrs. Dec. 26, 1915 she married Adolph C. Harms at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. To this marriage, five children were born. Mr. and Mrs. Harms lived near Johnson for three years and on the Conrad Harms home place near Auburn until 1938, when they moved to Bayard. In 1968 they returned to Johnson, NE. Sophia was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and also of the Lutheran Church Women. She was also president of Morrill County Federation of Women's clubs and secretary of Bayard Federation of Women's Club. She was the first pianist of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church from 1913 to 1915. Jan. 1, 1976 Adolph passed away. Since June of 1986, she was a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Auburn. During the last year Sophia was in failing health and on March 3, 1989, she passed away at the Good Samaritan Center, having reached the age of 92 years, 10 months and 13 days. She was the last surviving child of the Ernest Oestmann family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph; parents; four children, Vincent, Avis Beth Jennings, Willis, and Helene; one grandson Grant Jennings; five brothers and one sister. Surviving are one son, Carroll Harms of Longmont, CO.; one son-in-law, Ivan Jennings of Colorado Springs, CO.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; other relatives, and many friends. Funeral services were held March 6 at St. Matthew's Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Everett Brailey. Pallbearers were Gregory Harms, Jeffrey Harms, Timothy Harms, Pat Collins, Charles Collins, Walter Knippelmeier and Clayton Jennings. Mrs. Robert Hogrefe was organist and Jeffrey Harms, soloist. Burial was in the church cemetery near Johnson, Ne.
