Highland Recorder January 2, 1942 Miss Ester Ann Katherine Matheny, age eighty-eight years, 6 months and 16 days, one of Highland’s well known and beloved women, died Saturday afternoon, Dec 27 at two o’clock at the home of her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Given Bird in Monterey, after a short illness with pneumonia and complications due to the infirmities of age. She was a daughter of the late Daniel Matheny and Mrs. Sarah Warwick Matheny, well known and honored citizens of a former day. Born June 11, 1853, at the Matheny homestead on Back Creek, where the greater part of her life was lived. During the past sixteen years, she made her heme with Mr. and Mrs. Bird, who cared for her and loved her as their own mother. She was converted at the age of twelve years and joined the Methodist church at Rehobeth, where she held her membership during the years. She was a devoted Christian woman, active in the work, and a regular attendant at all services of the church, until denied this privilege due to failing health and advancing years. More than fifty years ago she taught in the schools of Monterey and during the time that her uncle, the late Capt. J.C. Matheny, was superintendent of the Monterey Methodist Sunday School. She was an active worker in the Sunday school, a work that continued through the years of her active life. Her brothers and sisters all preceded her in death, and her survivors include her nephews, Wallace Matheny, J. Cecil Bird, Given Bird and Kenneth Bird, and a niece, Mrs. Clyde Herold, and a number of grandnephews and nieces. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at eleven o’clock from the Monterey Methodist church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. D.G. Trent assisted by Rev. A.E. Johnson, Rev. T.O. Bird and Rev. C.B. Gibbs. Interment was in the family plot at Rehobeth on Back Creek.
