GREER, ACTIVE IN WELFARE AND SOCIAL WORK, DIES THURSDAY Esther Heffner Greer, 36, prominent in welfare and social work in Lima, died at 2:45 a.m. Thursday in St. Rita's hospital after an illness since January. Born Nov. 26, 1900 on the Heffner farm, Harding-hy, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Heffner, Mrs. Greer moved to Lima in 1908. After her graduation from Central high school she was employed as clerk to Judge Emmett Jackson of the criminal court. After her marriage on Jan. 28, 1924 to W.P. Greer, district representative of the Universal-Atlas Cement Co., she became active in social and welfare work and was prominent in the younger society life of the city. During the years of 1935-1936 she acted as Christmas mother and was president of the board at the time of her death. She also served as corresponding secretary of the Council of Social Agencies, was a member of the board of the Visiting Nurses-assn. and of the Family Welfare society. In 1932 she was a moving spirit in the soup kitchen movement. Mrs. Greer served as treasurer of the Garden club in 1935 and 1936 and once was state recording secretary of the Delphian society. She also was a member of St. Agnes guild. In church activities Mrs. Greer, a member of the Congregational Christian church, served on the finance board. She was a member of Shawnee Country club and took an active part in social activities of the club. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Carl Blake, both residing at 418 S. Kenilworth-av, and her mother, Mrs. Emma Blanche Heffner, 1100 Bellefontaine-av. Other survivors are, Mrs. Joyce Durbin, a sister, and James I. Heffner, a brother, both of Lima; half-brothers, Ray and Waldo Severns, of Lima, Miles Heffner, of near Lima, and Elden Heffner, of Ottawa. She is also survived by three half-sisters, Mrs. John McPheron, Mrs. Amos Mowery and Mrs. W.P. Kramer, all of Lima. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the home with the Rev. N.D. Newlin in charge, assisted by the Rev. S.M. Davidian. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. The body will remain at the Davis, Miller and Son mortuary until 6 p.m. Friday.
