Ross Edwards about Estill Edwin Rhoades, who had recently turned 102. Estil Rhoades - Unusual Christian It has been my privilege to know Estil Rhoades for many years. In many respects Estil Rhoades is a very unusual person. Let me tell you about him. Estil Rhoades was born November 22, 1872, in a log house northeast of Slater in what is known as the Good Hope community. He spent all of his life in farming except for a few years when he operated a grocery store and meat market in Slater. On his 100th birthday, First Church, Slater, where he and Mrs. Rhoades have been honored members for many years, gave a reception and many friends came to see them at that time. Mr. Rhoades celebrated his 102nd birthday on November 22, 1974. Due to a stroke that he suffered more than a year ago, Mr. Rhoades is confined to his home. His mind, however, is clear. He has limited use of his body. He still likes to discuss many subjects, especially matters that pertain to the Kingdom of God. He still has a good sense of humor. While working on the farm all alone when he was 90 years of age his clothes caught fire and he suffered severe burn damage to his body. In spite of this, he continued to work and continued to attend the services of his church until recently. While supplying the pulpit for Pastor Orville Haines and First Church, Slater, in July, 1974, I had the privilege of visiting in the home of Brother and Mrs. Rhoades. Mrs. Edwards and I were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Page, also of First Church, Slater. In the afternoon, Brother Page and I visited with Brother Rhoades. Brother Rhoades has been very generous with his church and with all mission causes, especially foreign missions. He usually gives thousands of dollars to the annual Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. On one occasion, a few years ago, he sent a check for $100,000 to the Foreign Mission Board. Upon receiving the check, someone called him about the disposition he would like to make or what use he would like to have made of the $100,000. It is our understanding that Mr. Rhoades replied, "Well, I'll not try to tell you just how to use the money, but I will tell you how not to use it - don't spend it on long distance telephone calls to me." It is our understanding that Mr. Rhoades has deeded his 1,300 acres of Missouri River Land to the Foreign Mission Board. This land is very valuable. In order to make sure that a maximum amount of money goes to mission causes, Mr. and Mrs. Rhoades live a simple life. Observe the Rhoades house with Mr. Page standing in front. It is rather plain. It does not have air conditioning. The day I was there the temperature was very high and Mr. Rhoades had a fan on him. They could surely afford a much more luxurious house and air conditioning. The Rhoades prefer to live a simple Christian life. I asked Mr. Rhoades if he would mind if I had my picture made with him. He smiled and said that he would like it. Even though his body may appear a little worn, his mind is still very keen. Mr. Rhoades said that he was so busy with his work that he didn't take time to get married until he was 61 years of age, when he married Miss Ezzie Bailey on April 3, 1934.
