Read More	URSCHEL, ETHEL C.—Ethel C. Urschel was born July 30, 1931, in Geneva, to Robert M. and Mildred M. Love Kiester. She was their only child. She died on June 27, 2001, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 69 years, 10 months and 27 days. She was raised in the Geneva community and was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church. She joined the church in 1941, and served as the President of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and later would serve as chairman of various Circles and as a Sunday school teacher. While in high school she worked at the Holroyd’s Bakery. Following graduation she attended and graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University, where she joined the Beta Tau Chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority. She was a 50-year member of this sorority, and belonged to the Order of the Golden Rose. She graduated from Wesleyan with a Degree in Education and continued her education at Doane and York College. She taught in the elementary schools in Beatrice for two years. It was in Beatrice that she met her husband-to-be. Alan was a young engineer installing a microwave system tower in Beatrice. He and a friend, Perry Deaton went on a date with Ethel and a girlfriend. Perry was with Ethel. They switched dates and six weeks later Ethel and Alan were married. Perry went on to marry the other girl and the couples remained lifelong friends. Ethel was married to Alan K. Urschel on Nov. 15, 1953, at the United Methodist Church in Geneva and one daughter, Kimberlee and two sons, Scott and Robert would bless this marriage. Her life was centered and devoted to her children and family. She served as president of the P.T.A. for Martha Turner Rielly Grade School and Hill Junior High in Dallas, Texas, where the family lived. She also served as president of the P.T.A. for Walter Hayes Elementary in Palo Alto, Calif., and maintained lifetime memberships with these organizations. She served as a Girl Scout and Brownie Leader in Dallas, Texas, and also as Cub Scout and Weebelo's Den Mother. She was a Boy Scout Leader at various levels and was president of the Geneva Band Mothers. She eagerly helped with class sponsorships, assisted her son in a business called “Middle Earth” and also found time to be president of the Theta Chi Fraternity Parents Group. Ethel enjoyed being around children of all ages. She loved their vitality and zest for life. She was especially attuned to those who could be labeled as the underdog and often provided moral support and help in various ways. She had an uncanny ability to encourage and motivate without destroying creativity. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who practiced unconditional love. Her fondest memories included the night she met Alan, her wedding day, times spent in Destin, Florida, Hawaii, Casa do Campo and the Lake house in Lincoln. In her quiet times she enjoyed gardening ceramics, needlepoint, knitting and solitaire. Her special pets included Queenie the Cocker Spaniel and Buster, her Boston terrier. Like the children she enjoyed knowing. Ethel always had a zest for life and a desire to be with people. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving on various committees and Circles and also was a member of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mildred Kiester. She is survived by her husband, Alan K. Urschel; daughter, Kimberlee and husband, John Hixon; sons, Scott and wife, Marilyn and Robert and wife, Cynthia; and by six grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 2, 2001, with Rev. Brian Kottas officiating. William Turek provided piano music with selections of “In the Garden”, “Unforgettable” and “Lara’s Theme.” Casket bearers were Charles Barbur Sr., Bill Biegert, Todd Dinslage, Jay Howell, Mark O’Brien and Larry Urschel.
