She was residing at the Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, S.D., at the time of death. Funeral services were held Sept. 25, 1982, at the Fulton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ethel Gertrude Hershey was born on Aug. 24, 1890, at Hurley, S.D., to Robert and Elizabeth (Livingston) Hershey. After two years at Hurley High School, she taught school for 11 years. This included teaching at schools in Montana. She and her sister Jen had talked of homesteading in Montana, but their mother convinced them to try teaching first. It was in Montana where Ethel met her future husband, Emory Hall, of Kinsman, Ohio. They parted ways, however, with Ethel returning to South Dakota and Emory to Ohio. In 1918, Ethel entered nurses training at Asbury Methodist Hospital in Minneapolis. When she took the Minnesota state nursing board exam, her score exceeded all who had taken the test before her and for decades after. She was graduated an R.N. in 1921 and was named supervisor of nurses at Methodist Hospital in Sioux City. Ethel sent a graduation announcement to Emory, and their correspondence led to their marriage on Oct. 25, 1921, at the Methodist parsonage in Hurley. They farmed in Ohio until 1928, when they moved to Parker, S.D., to farm. They lived on various farms, mostly in Turner County, except for a few difficult years in Centerville, S.D., during the Great Depression. Her faith in God and devotion to family sustained her after losing two-year-old son LaVerne in 1935. In the late 1940s, Ethel and Emory moved to Hanson County, to farm and raise their youngest son. They lived on their last farm north of Fulton for more than 31 years. A devout Methodist, Ethel was a member of the Fulton Methodist Church for more than 30 years. She also was a member of the Busy Bees homemakers extension club and Farmers Union, and she actively supported 4-H. Ethel valued education and was proud that all of her children graduated from college. She inspired and encouraged her grandchildren to pursue college as well. In her later years, Ethel wrote her memoirs, which she shared with family and a limited number of libraries. She is survived by her husband, Emory; five sons: Emory II, Harold, Donald, Rodney, and Courtney; one daughter, Beverly Middleton; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Ethel was preceded in death by one son, LaVerne; her parents; her three brothers: Hugh, Stan, and John; and five sisters: Sadie, Jennie, Bessie, Nellie, and Anna.
