Ethel was born March 28, 1913, during a North Dakota blizzard while her dad was out checking the cattle. Of her 12 siblings, she was the only one not born in Montana where her parents, George and Myrtle Baeth, were sheep ranchers near Malta. Ethel was born March 28, 1913, during a North Dakota blizzard while her dad was out checking the cattle. Of her 12 siblings, she was the only one not born in Montana where her parents, George and Myrtle Baeth, were sheep ranchers near Malta. When she was 10 years old, her family moved to Warland where her dad ran the Warland Ferry. In 1926, the family moved into Libby so Ethel's oldest brother Bill could start high school, and her dad George began working in the boiler room at J. Neils Lumber Co. In 1934, Ethel eloped with Edward Hewitt and lived with his folks up Parmenter Creek. In 1936, they took a honeymoon to Seattle to visit her Uncle Pete, who had moved to Walla Walla, Wash. They immediately drove on to Walla Walla. After their visit, they headed back home, running out of money at St. Maries, Idaho, where they ended up working in a logging camp for a year with Mom as a camp flunky/cook. One summer during the Depression, they made their living up Libby Creek panning for gold when Mom's brother-in-law told them there was work in Troy on the railroad. They stayed in Troy, where their oldest daughter Mary was born in 1942. Ed enlisted in the Army in October 1942, leaving Ethel with her small daughter to raise, so she moved back to Libby to be near her parents. During the war years, she moved to Wisconsin and Galveston, Texas, to be close to Ed. After the war, they bought a house in Libby from her brother Ted, where they welcomed their daughter Jane to the family in 1948 and raised their two daughters in that house. After a three-year sojourn in California, Ed and Ethel returned to Libby and built a house out on Terrace View, where she lived until she was 97 1/2 years old, only residing in a care center for the last 1 1/2 years of her life. Ethel was a wife and mother waiting for her husband and children to come home, where some kind of dessert was always waiting and a fresh pot of coffee was on the stove. Everyone wanted Ethel's cinnamon rolls. Ethel loved to play cribbage and pinochle and could bid a hand without looking at her cards. One of our favorite memories is of her playing Pictionary with her grandkids. She was adventuresome as long as you were headed home, kept your eye on the road and had a full tank of gas. She loved fried chicken and country music. Her favorite singers were Toby Keith, Vince Gill and Josh Turner. Ethel was a special wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; son-in-law, John Kelly; parents, George and Myrtle Baeth; and six siblings, Bill, Ted, Boss, Ruth, Edna and Katherine. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Kelly and Jane Pickering; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Alan, Aurora, Cecilia, Gabriella and Joshua Kelly, Craig, Diann, Johnathan and Lane Kelly, Kris and her special Kiya Kelly, Chad, Holly, Kenzy, Cason and Cache Pickering, and Katie, Wood, Ty and Lucas Sherrill. She is also survived by her son-sorta, Mike Quinlan; Chuck Pickering; and six siblings, Mildred, Kenny, Edith, Betty, Dick and Brad; along with numerous other relatives. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. May 26h at Christ Lutheran Church, Libby with a potluck gathering at Firemen's Park. In lieu of flowers, buy carnations for your table and think of Ethel.
