Monticello Road, Rochester, died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday at Life Care Center, Rochester. She was born Jan. 9, 1917, in Mishawaka, the daughter of Charles and Elgie Ipes Moon. On March 9, 1938, she married Floyd B. "Jim" Mathias in Mishawaka. They moved to Rochester from Mishawaka in 1938. He passed away on March 4, 1969. Ethel, a homemaker, was accomplished at crocheting. She fashioned a number of crocheted creations: blankets, scarves, purses, hats and afghans. These beautiful and unique gifts of warmth were shared with family and special friends. The challenges of word puzzles were never too difficult for Ethel as she persevered to completion. In an effort to stay fit and increase her longevity while helping friends, Ethel was one of the original trio who helped found senior aerobics. With great enthusiasm she would lead her troop of seniors with spirited leg kicks, jumping jacks and toe touches at the senior center three times each week. Ethel's delectable culinary skills will always be remembered by those who dined at the Resource Center, Rochester Sale Barn and the Alpha-Bit Box Day Care Center. Jenny, her loyal and devoted toy fox terrier, enjoyed comforting her and could often be seen sitting on Ethel's lap. Survivors include a son, James I. MATHIAS, Rochester; three sisters, Hattie Baldwin, Agatha Marsh and Thelma Frettinger, all of Rochester; three brothers, Charles Moon, Mishawaka, William Moon and wife Marilyn, Rochester, and Donald Moon and wife Ema, Florida; and nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Donna Belle Hoff. A celebration of the life of Mrs. Ethel Marie Mathias will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Indiana 14 West, Rochester. Rev. Thad Stewart and Rev. Larry Dodge will officiate. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. until the service. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Floyd B. "Jim" Mathias, at Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Preferred memorials may be made to the First Church of God of Rochester or the Old Cross Road Baptist Church of Gilead, as she was a member of both.
