Gene Callahan — beloved husband, father and grandfather — was born in 1938, in Greeley to Charles and Dolores Callahan, and was the fourth of eight siblings. He grew up in Greeley. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1956, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and was stationed primarily in Maine and Reykjavik, Iceland. After leaving the Navy in 1959, he returned to Greeley and worked with in his dad’s business for a few years before moving to Minneapolis. Gene married Faye Weidner in 1965 in O’Neill, and they lived in Minneapolis until they returned to Greeley in 1969, when Gene bought his father’s business. Originally Callahan Feed & Seed, the business underwent various expansions and transformations, including farming supplies, fertilizers, hardware and, finally, groceries. Gene was a tireless worker, but one who loved making kids laugh in his store and playing practical jokes on unsuspecting customers. Begrudgingly, Gene retired in 2014 and closed the store after 69 years in business. Gene and Faye had five children and spent their lives teaching their children the importance of family, work ethic and exploring beyond their comfort zones. Gene loved flying small airplanes, fishing, camping, hunting and, most of all, telling stories. His greatest joy, however, was his seven grandchildren. Gene is survived by his wife, Faye of Greeley; five children, a son-in-law and daughters-in-laws, Charles and Stacey Callahan of Phoenix, Arix., Lisa Callahan of Las Vegas, Nev., Steve and Shellee Callahan of Salina, Kan., Eric and McKenzie Callahan of Manhattan, Kan., and Jenny and Ralph Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz; seven grandchildren, Jack, Mike, Kate, Nate, Ryne, Tucker and Parker; and three brothers, Thomas of Lincoln, Daniel of Greeley and Martin of Greeley. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bernard; and three sisters, Margaret Swain, Ann Brown and Mary Jane Callahan.
