Sterling, prominent retired farmer and waterman, died at the home of his son, Mr. Newman Sterling, in the Mariners section, shortly after midnight Sunday night. He was 76 years of age. Read More	RETIRED FARMER, WATERMAN DEAD Mr. Eugene E. Sterling, prominent retired farmer and waterman, died at the home of his son, Mr. Newman Sterling, in the Mariners section, shortly after midnight Sunday night. He was 76 years of age. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sterling of the same community. Mr. Sterling had been in failing health for a number of years, finally succumbing to a heart ailment. Gene Sterling was a rugged individualist, who worked hard and prospered. In the summer he devoted his efforts to farming and was highly successful. In the winter, he went on the water, usually tonging oysters with his own rig, and in this too, he met with success. He had strong feelings on matters of public interest, and was frank in his expressions. When he liked a person there was nothing he would not do for him. If he disliked someone, he left him severely alone. For a good many years he was a power in local Democratic politics in his community. He fought hard in primary and general elections for his friends and his party, and his advice and assistance were eagerly sought and valued. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crisfield. During his lifetime he had made warm friends, he had been helpful to many when the going got rough, he believed in returning favors, and until disease compelled him to retire, he worked the land that he loved so well, and made occasional trips on the water, fishing and catching oysters. He had had a very active and full life. Funeral services were held in the Hinman Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. James O'Neil, pastor of Mariners Methodist Church. Burial was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. Bearers were Luther Sterling, William Nelson, Jesse Evans, Charles Cole, Stephen Ward and Skeet McCready. Surviving him are one son, Mr. Newman Sterling, and two sisters, Mrs. Earl Beck of Crisfield and Mrs. Cevie Howard of Salisbury.
