Schafer was the son of Sarah and James Schafer and was born on May 24,1877 at Klecknerville, Northampton County, PA. and passed away June 11, 1945 at Manhattan Kansas at the age of 68 years and 17 days. In infancy he was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church but later attended the Methodist Church. At the age of three years of age he came to Kansas with his parents and grew to man- hood at a farm three and one-half miles south of Vermillion and lived the remainder of his life in this community. On March 7, 1906 he was united in marriage to Margaret McCoy at Leavenworth, Kansas and to this union was born two daughters, Mary Ellen and Sara Louise. He was preceded in death by his parents, his only sister, Gertrude Duffy, and two brothers, Harold Claron and Clinton. He is survived by his wife Magaret; his daug- hters Mrs. Mary Ellen Roberts, and Mrs. Sara Schafer both of Herington, Kansas; five brothers, John C. Schafer, Manhattan, Robert A., Frank B., and Oliver J. Schafer, Blue Rapids, Kansas.
