Schafer oldest son of James and Sarah Schafer was born in Pennsy- lvania on December 30, 1868, has died at his home in Vermillion, Kansas on May 17, 1940. With his parents and six brothers he came to Kansas in June of 1879. They settled on a farm in Vermillion Kansas. Schafer oldest son of James and Sarah Schafer was born in Pennsy- lvania on December 30, 1868, has died at his home in Vermillion, Kansas on May 17, 1940. With his parents and six brothers he came to Kansas in June of 1879. They settled on a farm in Vermillion Kansas. Given his early background in the Dutch Reform Church they united with the Methodist Church in Vermillion where he was a devote member and the president of the board of trustees at the time of his death. On March 10, 1889 he was married to Maggie Harper in a double wedding service with her twin sister Belle and Charles Oliver. From the time of their marriage until 1909 they lived on their farm south of Vermillion where they had four daughters born to them and later moving to a home in Vermillion. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Vermillion Lodge No. 320 where he served as treasurer for almost 30 years and also a member of Cordella Chapter No. 247 O.E.S. He is survived by two daughters Mrs. Marjorie Woodman, St. Joseph, MO. and Mrs. Meria Hybskman, Baldwin, Kansas, Gertrude and Elizabeth having died in infancy; seven brothers, John, Robert, Clinton, Oliver, Eugene, Frank and Charles. His sister Gerturde Duffy passed away in 1923. He leave five grandchildren. Funeral services where held at the Methodist church with Reverend H.M. Sanders officiating. Pallbearers were six of Mr. Schafer's brothers, Clinton, Oliver, Robert, Charles, Eugene and John with interment in the Vermillion Cemetery.
