BERT McVEY Eva Jeanette Shore was born in Pleasant township, Lucas county, Iowa, on January 28, 1874, and died at Brownsville, Texas, Sept. 27, 1921, in the early morning at the age of 47 years, 7 months and 29 days. She grew to womanhood in Lucas county and spent most of her life not very far from the place of her birth, having moved to Texas in October, 1920. She was married to Bert Lee McVey on January 13, 1898, who survives her. They had no children of their own, but took his three half-sisters when they were about 10, 8 and 6 years old and reared them. They are Mrs. Gwennie Scull, of Burlington, Iowa; Mrs. Sophia Welch, of South Dakota; and Mrs. Ida Pierce of Knoxville, Iowa. She also leaves her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Shore of Chariton and six brothers and one sister. They are: Orville, of Lincoln township; W. D., of Blank, S. Dak.; Clarence Otto, of Chariton; Jess A., of Knoxville; Eugene, of Williamson; Mrs. Mae Foster, of Chariton; and Everett, of Williamson. There are also a host of other kindred and friends. She was converted to Christ in the winter of 1887 in a revival meeting conducted by Rev. Porter. She was very bright in her experience of salvation, and was very joyful in her spiritual blessing afterward. Two days before her call to death she wrote a letter to her parents. She seemed to be in usual health and all appeared to be going well. This was Sunday, Sept. 25. On Tuesday, the wire brought the shocking news of her death. She attended a Sunday school and church services at El Jardine, two miles out of Brownsville. On Monday she did her usual work and walked a mile. At 9:30 p.m. she retired comfortable and happy. After the early morning chores, her husband called to her but found that her spirit had taken it's flight. The doctor's opinion was that she had been dead five or six hours. No signs of a struggle or pain could be discerned. A smile was on her face. Her heart had ceased to beat and she was asleep in Jesus. The funeral was conducted at the U. B. church in Chariton by Rev. F. W. Curtis, assisted by Rev. C. McKinley of Russell, and interment was in the Zion cemetery. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
