Van Slyke, longtime resident of Greeley and Valley counties, were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Scotia. Mrs. Van Slyke died Thursday in a St. Paul hospital. She was 75. Mrs. Van Slyke was born August 11, 1893 in Greeley County to Wallace and Eliza Clement Maxwell. She grew up in Greeley and in March 1911 was married to John Jess. They lived in the Lammartine community. After his death in 1941, she was married on February 28, 1945 at St. Paul to Henry Van Slyke. The family lived in Valley County until 1960, when they retired and moved to Scotia. Her husband died in January of 1963. She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Scotia. Survivors include two sons, Lavern Jess of Scotia and Elton Jess of Wolbach; one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Vost at Lincoln; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Ralph Huebner of Lincoln and Mrs. Harold Day of Cotesfield; 12 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl Maxwell of Torrington, Wyoming and Ivan Maxwell of Scotia; and a sister Mrs. Leroy Yax of Scotia. A daughter and one infant brother also preceded her in death.
