What might have been a serious accident occurred at the railroad station last week. A party of 18 went to Laconia last week to attend a lodge meeting and made preparations to have the midnight train stop. When the train arrived at this place the Brakeman let off one man and then gave a signal to start without waiting for the rest to get off, stating that he didn't know there were others to disembark. The remainder of the party were ladies who, becoming anxious, began to step off the train. Before the train could be stopped a number of ladies had been knocked down, bruised and otherwise hurt. Mrs. John Gunn and Mrs. Thomas Carr were most seriously hurt. >The Ashland Citizen, May 19, 1909. Dog Rouses Family in Night Fire. The family of John Angus Gunn who reside at 40 Russell Street may owe their lives to their little dog Koko toy terrier about three years old, whose insistent barking aroused the early Monday morning, about three o'clock as fire raced through the basement of their seven room house. Mr Gunn went downstairs where his little dog slept and found the lower rooms filled with smoke. He called his wife who awakened their two children, John, Jr. and Faye, 11, and then dashed out the door to sound the alarm from Box 35 at the corner of Crawford and Russell Streets, near his home. Through the quick action of the Plymouth Fire Department headed by Chief Ralph Cass, the blaze was soon brought under control. The cause of the fire was undetermined and damage was confined to the basement, where timbers and flooring were scorched, destroyed a partition and some household furniture which was stored in the basement. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Evans, next-door neighbors to the Gunns opened their home to the family and served hot food. Faye spent the remainder of the night with Mr. and Mrs. Warren Blake, going to school as usual during the day. Mrs. Gunn is employed at Blake's Restaurant Card of Appreciation We wish to express our appreciation to members of the Plymouth Fire Department for their quick response and efficient work at our recent fire, resulting in a minimum damage. We also are grateful to neighbors and friends for their assistance at this time, especially to Mr. and Mrs. Warren Blake and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Evans who took our family into their homes. (Fosie) Farley died Monday at the Sceva Speare Memorial Hospital, Plymouth after a long illness. She was born in Plymouth August 19, 1914, daughter of Alfred Leslie and Emma Marcia (Cayes) Fosie and had lived most of her life in Plymouth. She had resided in Ashland for about five years. She was a member of Enterprise Rebekah Lodge of Plymouth. Evie was also Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge and Current President of the Past Noble Grand's Club and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Plymouth. Members of her family include her husband, John Angus Gunn, Jr. of Clearwater, Florida, one daughter Mrs Marjorie Fay (Gunn) Fowler of Middletown, Md.; two step-sons, David D. Farley of Holderness and Richard D Farley of Manchester, Ct.; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Alfred Fosie of North Wilmot, Albert Fosie of Las Vegas, Nevada and Herbert Fosie of Boscawen; three sisters, Mrs. Gladys Caverly of Plymouth, Mrs Mildred Richter of Pompano Beach, Florida and Mrs. Louise Elliott of Plymouth. Bearers are Arnold Fowler of Middletown, John A. Gunn, Jr. of Clearwater, David Farley, Holderness, Louis Sleeper, Plymouth, Donald McKinnon, Campton and Glenn Williams, Stinson Lake. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 at the United Methodist Church Plymouth with the Reverend Philip Polhemus officiating. Organist will be Mrs. Joyce Folsom. Burial will follow at Green Grove Cemetery, Ashland. LaFontaine Funeral Home of Plymouth is in charge of arrangements. >The Ashland Citizen, 1977.
