Fish, who attained national fame as a college basketball coach, died early this morning of cancer in St. Mary's Hospital. Everett "Gus" Fish coached championship teams at Kansas State Teachers College for 25 years before he retired, in 1970. He was named in 1960 to the Hall of Fame for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic coaches. He served in 1960 and 1964 on the Olympic coaching staff and was a long-time member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He also participated in President Eisenhower's Fitness for American Youth Conference. Mr. Fish was the president of the NAIA in the 1950's. He originated the statistical bureau of the association, was a former chairman of the All-American selection committee and was a former supervisor of the advisory committe for Olympic trials. Everett Fish was born July 16th, 1905, on a farm northeast of Emporia, the son of Franklin H. and Mary Etta Lafferty Fish. He was married to Nina Gray on May 30th, 1931, in Jewell. He received his Bachelor of Science and his Master of Science degrees from KSTC and was athletic director at Roosevelt High School until he volunteered for service in World War II. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during the war, and served in the European Theater. Mr. Fish was a member of the First Congregational Church, was a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity while an undergraduate student, and he had been a member of a number of professional organizations. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, E. E., Lawrence, and Frank B. He is survived by his wife, of the home, 1616 Rural St.; one brother, A. G. Fish, of Toronto, and several nieces and nephews. Gus Fish's basketball fame started when he was a student at Emporia High School and was such an outstanding player that he was named in 1924 to the All-American High School team. His standout record on the KSTC team on the all-conference team in 1927, and again in 1928, and his ability as a coach was demonstrated shortly after his graduation, when the R.H.S. team he coached qualified for the state tournament and placed third. A resume of Coach Fish's record appeared in a Feb. 28th, 1970, article in The Gazette. Excerpts from the article follow. Fish came to the head coaching position in 1945, fresh from three years service in the Navy, and has remained to guard the Hornet fortunes since that time. Under his guidance the Hornets have a record of 334 wins and 287 losses, a record that may be misleading until the caliber of the competition is considered. Coach Fish never made a 'soft' schedule believing that competition with the best teams that could be scheduled made for a better team and gave the Hornet fans exciting games to watch. President John E. Visser said of the coach's decision to retire from the active ranks: "Without doubt, Gus Fish is one of the outstanding coaches in the history of K.S.T.C. In fact, he would rank among the great basketball coaches of the past quarter century in this region of the United States. His record and his reputation among basketball players, fans, and other coaches would attest to this fact. We will miss his services terribly, but he has unquestionably earned the right to step down." In his span of years as head coach the Hornets won the CIC title outright six times and tied once. His teams competed in playoffs seven times and competed six times in the NAIA national tourney placing fourth in 1946 and 1964. "The NAIA tournaments were highlights as my career as coach," 'Gus' said, "but in that many year of coaching there were many other highlights." He is particularly proud of the high caliber of competition for the Hornets through the years. During his tenure the Hornet pre-conference schedule always contained teams that were powerful in rankings and prestige. He has at one time or another played most of the present Big Eight teams, as well as teams from the Missouri Valley and Texas conferences. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Congregational Church. They will be conducted by the Rev. Stephen J. Williams, pastor of the church. Cremation will follow. The Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Members of the family have suggested memorial donations to the Cancer Fund or the KSTC Endowment Fund. The casket will be open in the funeral home but it will not be open during the services.
