Fay Carol Halvorson (nee Lufkin), 93, was born September 23, 1925 to Archie C and Grace (Gehrke) Lufkin in Thief River Falls, MN. At age four, she moved with her parents to Grand Forks, ND. She attended school in Grand Forks. A bright student, Fay was advanced a year, graduating from Grand Forks Central High School in 1942. In the fall of 1942, just shy of 17, she enrolled at the University of North Dakota, majoring in food science and nutrition. In the spring of 1946 she graduated top of her class with a Bachelor of Science degree. Fay was an active co-ed with many interests. A favorite elective course for her was pottery, taught by renowned art potter Margaret Cable (UND School of Mines). As a senior, she was selected as a member and President of Mortar Board, an academic and leadership honorary society. She was student manager of the campus radio station KFJM- AM. While working at KFJM she met her husband of 66 years, Oscar H Halvorson, who was the student engineer. After a two-year, long distance engagement, they married on Tuesday, June 18, 1946 in Grand Forks, ND. Together they embarked on a life of adventure, seeking new challenges and raising a family. They had five children, three boys and two girls; co-owned and were managing partners of three radio stations, were instrumental in the development of two, and owned a forth in three states; and expanded their wheat farm near Wildrose, ND. They moved to Sidney, Montana where Oscar was an engineer at KGCX-AM Radio. Fay took advantage of the opportunity to be the on-air host of women's interests programs. In 1956 they moved to Stephenville, Texas when they purchased KSTV-AM Radio. Because of her "northern" voice, she was initially hesitant to continue with on-air work, but soon realized it was an asset and her southern audience enjoyed her women's programs. In 1957 the family moved to North Dakota when Oscar was recruited by the new television station KUMV-TV. Because of the 1950's oil boom housing shortage in Williston, they located in Round Prairie. In 1958 they moved to Williston. Shortly after arriving in Williston, Fay was sought out by her former UND professors to join the founding faculty of the University of North Dakota Extension Center (later UND-Williston; now Williston State College). As the college's first chemistry lab instructor, she was in her element. Her courses later included zoology lab. Fay was proud of her students as they continued in their university studies and careers beyond the college. In the 1960's they were instrumental in building the new KGCA–AM ("Geographical Center of (North) America") Radio station with partners in Rugby, North Dakota. Fay is credited with the call letters of the station. In the early 1970s, Fay and Oscar became co-owners and managing partners of KGCX–AM Radio (Sidney, MT and Williston, ND and later added KGCH – FM. She provided news coverage for the Williston area and co-hosted with her son, David, the popular "Ask Your Neighbor" program. It was a live on-air call-in program for people seeking to trade a variety of items, advice and information. She was a full business partner with her husband and attended National Association of Broadcasters conventions. In later years she remarked how her various careers and work involved talking with people. Fay was an active member of the Williston community. As a member of AAUW (American Association of University Women) for many years, she formed long-term friendships. She served on the Salvation Army Board for several years, including as president, and was active with the Chamber of Commerce. With the Williston-based Miss North Dakota pageant, she helped entrants prepare for the Q & A session. She and Oscar were life-long members of First Lutheran Church, Williston. She was a woman of strong faith (choosing to be baptized at age 13). She taught vacation bible school and, together with Oscar, she completed many bible studies at First Lutheran, including the three-year Bethel Bible Series. In 1994 they traveled to Israel and Egypt for a Holy Land tour. Her interests and social groups included Homemakers group, the Williston Genealogy Club (contributing to the "I hereby declare...An Index of the Declaration of Intention and Final Naturalization Papers" for Williams County for the Williston Centennial in 1986), and book club. She enjoyed creating themed menus and exploring various cuisines with the "Gourmet Group". She enjoyed ceramics for several years. She and Oscar traveled the US and beyond, visiting all the lower 48 states, Hawaii and a Panama Canal cruise. Fay was a Homeroom Mother, Cub Scout den mother for her three sons, supporting them through Boy Scouts as they earned Eagle Scout rank, and a Bluebird group leader for her daughters. An accomplished seamstress, she sewed many clothes and costumes for her young children. Her innovative talents in the kitchen are family favorites. Her creative birthday cakes unique to each child are great memories. Fay was a woman of her generation, and yet, beyond. As a child during the Depression and a university student during WWII, she learned many lessons and insights to life. She helped her mother with the family's "Victory Garden". Fond of her hometown, Grand Forks, she considered herself a "Red River Woman". She had a strong sense of what she wanted in life. She truly was an example of "blooming where you're planted". She took on not so typical opportunities for women in each state and town in which they lived. Even though she did not work in her intended field, she applied her degree to careers in broadcasting and academics. She was a full partner with Oscar in their businesses, farming and faith. Many times she remarked on Oscar's complete trust in and support of her abilities. She complimented his "take an interest" approach to life with her "I choose to participate" spirit. As a natural redhead, she "owned it"! Her many "Mommilies" continue to guide her family. Her favorite things included tulips, lily of the valley and the five-petal wild prairie rose; robins, meadowlarks and butterflies. Her ability to find a connection within minutes of meeting someone was amazing. She had an intellectual wit, unique insight, curiosity and humor that shined through, even in her final days. Fay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Oscar, her first born David P Halvorson, sisters and brothers in-law Gladys (Halvorson) and Robert E Anderson, and Inez (Halvorson) and Willard Magnuson, and nephew Wayne Viall. Her family is saddened by the loss of her earthly presence but rejoice in her being with her Lord and Savior.
