Fern Wood Smith (born 1896)What's a woman to do when her husband dies leaving her with three ,children aged six, four, and two? Move into town and start making chocolates, that's what.Fern and Frank Smith farmed at Hill Spring, 20 miles from Cardston. They had a new house, healthy children, good land, but along came the flu. Frank lived through it but died shortly after from a heart attack. Fern decided to rent the farm and live off the rent, but the Dirty Thirties arrived. The farm didn't produce enough income to support the young family, soFern took in boarders, baked and decorated wedding cakes, and made bread for customers. Then one day, she remembered the chocolates that she'd seen in production in Salt Lake City when she went to school there. Maybe chocolates would sell? They would. Eventually, Fern's Chocolates became well known in the area, and Fern bought herself an electric beater for the enormous sum of $750. It was the best investment she could have made. She made enough money to build her own house with a special area set aside in the basement for a small efficient chocolate factory.Book: 200 Remarkable Alberta Women, by Kay Sanderson [ISBN 0-9685832-0-2]see: http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=917829 (type in Fern Wood Smith, should show results on page 58.)
