Mrs. Nereim died Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton at the age of 84. Fern Lucille Sanderson was born Aug. 17, 1921, at Groton, S.D., to Ivan Samuel and Jennie Ethel (Clark) Sanderson. As a youngster, she moved to various places with her family where they lived, until settling in the Claremont area while Fern was in high school. Fern graduated from Claremont High School in 1939, and continued her education at Northern Normal in Aberdeen, where she received her teaching credentials. She began teaching school in 1940, serving country schools in the Claremont area. On Aug. 7, 1946, Fern married Orville K. Neriem at Groton. They made their home in Claremont. In addition to Fern teaching, and Orville working as a rural letter carrier, they also owned and operated the bowling alley in Claremont for several years. After her marriage, she taught school in Claremont, and later in the Langford school system, where she was teaching at the time of her retirement. Fern was a member of the United Methodist Church of Claremont, and active in the United Methodist Women group. She served as treasurer for the church and the U.M.W. for many years. At one time, Fern also belonged to a bridge club. She was an avid bowler, and bowled in various tournaments over the years, including one with her three daughters and her sister. She loved to do needlework, especially embroidery. Sporting events were also another of Fern's favorite pastimes. Orville died on May 2, 1983, and Fern continued to make her home in Claremont. In the fall 2002 she moved to Britton and has lived with her daughter, Karen Tchida, since that time. Teaching was more than a job to Fern; it was her life. Although she started teaching with her certificate, Fern devoted her time during summers to furthering her own education, and received her Bachelor's degree. She enjoyed touching the hundreds of lives that passed through her classes, and had a large impact on many of her students. She retired from teaching in 1981, after dedicating over 40 years of her life to educating young children. Grateful for having shared her life are her three daughters: Faye (Jeff) Stohr of Claremont, Kaye (Larry) Johnke of Irene, S.D., Karen (Ron) Tchida of Britton; nine grandchildren: Tim Johnke, Brock Johnke, Landra Knodel, Kendall Johnke, Bryce Johnke, Jacob Stohr, Trent Johnke, Terry Tchida and Kevin Tchida; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Lloyd Sanderson and Harold (Bonnie) Sanderson, both of Claremont. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister: Olive Feser; and a brother: Harlow Sanderson. Music for the funeral will be presented by Joan Thompson, organist; Yvonne Gibbs, pianist; and Pastor Bill Duncan, soloist. Her grandchildren will serve as casketbearers.
