Fern Marie Niemand was born July 29, 1918, in Pocahontas County, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Mina (Madsen) Niemand. She attended country school near Palmer and graduated from Palmer High School. On February 14, 1939, Fern married Cletus Stegge in Pocahontas, Iowa. The couple settled near Palmer where they farmed for 36 years. In 1977, they retired and moved to Fort Dodge. Cletus passed away in June of 1983. In October of 2007 Fern moved to the Heritage Apartments at Friendship Haven. In July of 2008 Fern celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends. Fern enjoyed gardening and she was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Survivors include her children Donald (Mary Jo) Stegge of Mesa, AZ; Carolyn (Jim) Liestman of Castle Rock, CO and Diane (Arden) Schoep of Ames; grandchildren, Greg Stegge, Jeff Stegge, Scott Liestman, Ann Wahlgren, Christi Rebholz, Darci Peterson and Danielle Bundy and 14 great-grandchildren. Fern was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cletus; brother, Wayne Niemand; and sister, Viona Jobe.
