As a young man he came to Dunlap and homesteaded on a farm west of town which Bernard Berens now owns. He was married to Annie Schlensig in February, 1886. She was born at Vyroca, Wisconsin in 1866. Annie Schlensig came from a family of 11 children; Annie (Kessler), Caroline (Crom), Hattie (Brace), Nellie (Brace),, Effie (Rethmeier), Mary (Merritt), Walt, Charles, William, Frank and John. Annie Schlensig's parents, Wm. and Elizabeth Schlensig came to Dunlap in a covered wagon. Fidell and Annie Kessler were parents of 5 girls: Carrie (Koski), Flossie (Wadsworth), Edith (Pedersen), Etta (Seieroe), and Helen (Snyder). Fidell was killed Aug. 11, 1914 when his team was frightened by one of the first cars in the Dunlap area. Annie died in 1930. 3 generations were born where the family homesteaded. They were: Mrs. Edith Pedersen, her son John, and John's daughter, Patricia. Edith (Kessler) Pederson, 3rd daughter of Annie and Fidell Kessler, was born Dec. 28, 1895 and was married to John Pedersen in 1918. They are the parents of 7 children. John died September 1949. Edith has spent her entire life around Dunlap. OBITUARY - DUNLAP REPORTER, 28 AUG 1914 Fidel Kessler was born in Johnson Co., Iowa, Oct 26 1853, and died in Dunlap, Iowa, August 17, 1914. He was the youngest of seven children, of whom three brothers and one sister survive him. After his mother's death in early manhood, he came to live in Harrison and Monona Counties. He was married to Miss Anna Schlensig, Feb. 4, 1886. They began life together twenty-eight years ago on their farm eight miles northwest of Dunlap where the family still resides. To this union were born five children, all of whom are living to be a comfort to their mother in her bereavement. They are Mrs. Carrie Koski, who lives on a farm adjoining her mother's, and the misses Flossie, Edith, Etta and Helen at home. Having spent all his mature years in this vicinity, the high esteem in which Mr. Kessler was held by friends and neighbors is a better eulogy than mere words. He was a kind man and loving husband and father, an ideal neighbor and a true friend. He obeyed the admonition Lincoln gave the nation. Having malace toward none and charity for all, he did the right as God gave him to see the right until he finished his cource. DEATH FROM AN ACCIDENT Dunlap Reporter 21 Aug 1914 A fatal accident occurred in this vicinity Monday forenoon in which Fidel Kessler, who lived on the Willow about seven miles northwest of Dunlap, met his death. Mr. Kessler was driving a four horse team to town that morning for a load of building material. When near the bridge at the Roth place me met Chris Mattison driving an auto. There was a colt or two in the team, and they shied at the auto. One of the horses crowded against the tongue, as we understand, and it broke. the end striking the ground. At this the team took fright and started to run. There is a turn in the road at the bridge. The horses kept in the road, but the wagon went straight ahead and over the embankment into the creek, a fall of from twenty to thirty feet. Mr. Kessler remained in the wagon and was thrown to the bottom, the fall breaking his spine. No blame is given Mr. Mattison. He stopped his machine when he saw the colts were frightened. Just after the accident B.F. Wilmot approached the bridge driving from the west. Messrs. Wilmot and Mattison got the injured man into the auto as soon as possible and took him to town. The accident occurred at about 10:30 and they got him to the doctor's office at 11 o'clock. Dr. Slattery, after the examination said the patient's back was broken, but to give him every chance a physician from Omaha was called, but he only confirmed the statement of the local doctor. The injured man was taken to the home of Mrs. Mary Merritt, where he died at 7:30 p.m. The funeral occurred from the Congregational Church in Dunlap Wednesday, at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Harned, of the M.E. church officiating.
