He was born in Hemingway, Williamsburg County, South Carolina, on June 26, 1912, the son of the late Frederick Eugene and Margaret Ann )Eaddy ) Huggins. A recorded ancestry both parental and maternal, reaches in honored position to the early days of this section of South Carolina. His father was one of the early merchants of Hemingway and was active in the formative period of its development. He was one of Hemingway's outstanding citizens and passed away on July 11, 1942. Edwin Huggins, as he was familiarly known by his friends ans business associates, is the seventh child of nine children born to his parents. His boyhood was passed in Hemingway where he was graduated from the Hemingway High School with the class of 1933. He began his business career in association with his father, the founder of F. E. Huggins Hardware Company of Hemingway, which had its beginnings in 1912. The business was first conducted as the Huggins and Eaddy Company and in 1914 the name of F. E. Huggins was adopted. Located on Broad Street in the heart of the business center of Hemingway, the location of the F. E. Huggins Hardware Company has remained the same over the years. At the beginning the enterprise carried a general stock of merchandise, including hardware, furniture and funeral supplies. In recent years the business has principally been confined to hardware of a wide variety, paints and building materials. F. Edwin Huggins continued closely associated with his father in operating this business until his father's death in 1942. At this time he bought out the interest of other heirs in the business and the present name of F. E. Huggins Hardware was adopted. Religious and civic activities have occupied much of Mr. Huggins time, and he entered freely and enthusaistically into these good works. As a member of the Hemingway Methodist Church, he has served since 1932, as secretary of the Sunday School; is chairman of the Board of Trustees; was secretart of the Building Committee of the new Methodist Church that was completed in 1949 and is presently co-chairman of the Building Committee erecting the new Educational Building, to be completed in 1955. In civic activities, he is the chairman of Civil Defense for Hemingway; is President of the Hemingway Wildlife Federation and is active in conservation work. As one of the organizers in 1936, of the Hemingway Volunteer Fire Department, Mr. Huggins has served as Chief of the department since 1940. He served as City Clerk of Hemingway for eight years and was a member of the City Council. As an ardent sportsman, he is a member of Lenends Ferry Hunting and Fishing CLub which includes his favorite pastimes. His farming activities include supervising of the Margaret Ann Huggins Farms in Williamsburg County. On September 19, 1936, Mr. Huggins married Miss Letha F. Brown, the daughter of the late Manning P. and Bessie (Eaddy) Brown, who were both born in the Browntown section of Florence County. Mrs. Huggins was a graduate of Hemingway High School and the Carolina College of Commerce of Florence. She is an active member of the Hemingway Methodist Church and belongs to the Wesleyan Service Guild of the Church. Mr. and Mrs. Huggins are the parents of one son, Fitzhugh Edwin Huggins, Jr., born June 28, 1938.
