BIRD, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Bird, located a ranch on Wheeler Hill in 1885. Having seen the benefits derived from irrigation in Montana, he early reached the conclusion that land brought under water in this section, by reason of soil and climatic conditions could be made wonderfully productive. Mathew and Jane (McClay) Bird Husband of Christina Slack Father of Byron, Emma and Lester FLETCHER M. BIRD, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Bird, located a ranch on Wheeler Hill in 1885. Having seen the benefits derived from irrigation in Montana, he early reached the conclusion that land brought under water in this section, by reason of soil and climatic conditions could be made wonderfully productive. His selection of land was made with reference to available water rights from Stemilt Creek, and he entered with energy into the plan for construction of the Wheeler Hill Ditch. He was one of the first men in the country to plant delicious apple trees, and this same ranch now under the ownership of Charles W. Oakes is producing fine crops of this variety. In 1891, Mr. Bird was married to Miss Christa Slack of the Big Bend country. Three children were born to this marriage: Byron, Lester, and Emma. Byron and Lester were in the World War, and both won distinction in service. Mr. Bird in spite of the hardships of frontier life managed to enjoy himself, and he can relate some interesting experiences of pioneer times. Late in the winter of 1889-90, which will be remembered for its deep snows, he was desperately working his way on snowshoes, towards a certain ranch sixteen miles east of Waterville. So slow and painful was his progress, that had his business been the purchase of a horse or the whole of Douglas County on a fat commission, he might have turned back, but since he was going to see the girl he wanted to marry he held doggedly to his course. Before reaching his destination he came to a point where in the distance he saw a man going through motions so grotesque as to furnish indications of insanity, but on getting closer he found that this party was trying, through a great depth of snow, to dig out fence posts for fuel, it being his only source of wood supply.
