Read More	Florence Mary Robbins Nichols was born to Ora A. Robbins and Lizzie Berniece Nichols Robbins on Mary 7, 1908 at Fairmont. She passed away October 24, 2000 at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont, at the age of 92 years, 5 months and 17 days. She was one of two children in the family. She was a lifetime resident of the Fairmont area. Florence was born and lived on farms within a two-mile radius of where she was born west of Fairmont until she and Everett moved into their new home in town in the fall of 1970. She moved to Fairview Manor in September, 1995. Florence attended rural school district No. 11 and graduated from Fairmont High School as a member of the Class of 1925. She took Normal training in high school and summer training in Lincoln. Upon graduation, she taught rural schools for six years in Districts No. 3, No. 11 and No. 81. Florence was married on her parent's family farm to Everett Nichols of Fairmont on September 10, 1931, and to them two children, Gene Earl and Marvin Dean were born. She and Everett celebrated their 50th anniversary in September of 1981. She was a loving wife, a dear mother and a kind mother-in-law. She believed in hard work and was an asset to her community. Living at the time of the Great Depression greatly influenced Florence. As a young homemaker, she worked tirelessly as a farm wife and young mother. She was a wonderful cook. Long days were spent working in the bountiful garden, canning and preserving food, raising hundreds of chickens for eggs to sell, hatching eggs and meat for the family meals. She also churned butter which was sold in the community on a "butter route." Saving and making do with what you had was a way of life for her. Her talent of sewing clothes always kept her busy. She sewed much of her own wardrobe as well as sewing clothes for Gene and Marvin. As a grandmother, she made many clothes for Beth. All the grandchildren had sweaters, hats, mittens and bedroom slippers knitted by Florence. She also used her skill to create beautiful afghans, delicate crocheted doilies and embroidered many scarves, pillowcases and wall hangings. Florence became a member of Star Rebekah Lodge No. 8 on June 8, 1942. She was also a long time member of West Blue Extension Club and Fairmont Federated Woman's Club. Visiting and getting together with friends and family was a great joy to Florence. She was an excellent teacher and she had great rapport with children. Her grandchildren knew her as a good friend, as well as their caring grandmother. She would play games and cards with the children to keep them entertained. A very competitive afternoon or evening of playing cards with her friends was one of her favorite pastimes. Neighborhood coffees and Tower coffees were enjoyed by her, as she kept in touch with the community and its activities. Her lively sense of humor kept the occasions fun. She was an avid letter writer, communicating with family, friends and long time schoolmates. She and Everett often went on fishing vacations in Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ora and Berniece Robbins; husband, Everett; sister, Hazel Robbins and son, Marvin Nichols. She is survived by her son, Gene E. Nichols and wife, Marilyn K. of Fairmont; daughter-in-law Marilyn D. Nichols of Geneva; grandchildren Mark Nichols of Lincoln; Mindy Nichols of Omaha; Beth Nichols of Littleton, Colorado; Scott Nichols and wife, Melissa of Lincoln; Todd Nichols of Lincoln and great-grandchildren, Baylee and Noah Nichols of Lincoln. Funeral services were conducted from Fairmont Community Church in Fairmont on Friday, October 27, 2000 with Pastor Betsy Galoway-Carew officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied Gregory L. Rehm, who sang "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" and "His Eye is on the Sparrow." Pallbearers were Jerry Galusha, Bill Jacobsen, Francis Jacobsen, Howard Lefler, Duaine Roper and Marvin Roper.
