DeVaul passed away from dreaded leukemia. He had been in poor health for some time, in fact had been forced to retire from farm work for several years. After he visited the Mayo clinic at Rochester during the past summer and learned the nature of his affliction, he failed rapidly and was confined to his bed two weeks previous to his death. Funeral services were held at the home in Pocahontas at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday and from the Methodist church at 2:30, in charge of Rev. J.R. Kirby of Pocahontas and interment was made in Washington cemetery at Havelock. The pallbearers were George Dyvig, Martin Larson, Marion Ham, George Cole, Thomas Jones and Raleigh Dunn. Music was furnished by Mrs. Paul Larson, Mrs. Carson Holtorf, Carl Bartli and Olin Young, with Mrs. John Whitman at the piano. Floyd P. DeVaul was born in the Dayton, Iowa, community December 23, 1880, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. DeVaul, and was 64 years, eight months and 21 days old at the time of death. When about 20 years of age he moved with his parents to the Fonda community. Here he farmed and taught school for sometime, transferring his teaching duties to the Dakotas for two years. Returning, he rented one of the Ben Allen farms in the Laurens community and farmed there for several years. In 1917 he purchased what was then known as the Simmons farm between Havelock and Rolfe where he set up business for himself. During his life in Pocahontas county he had resided in three communities and was one of the most widely known men in the county. On June 22, 1918, he was united in marriage to Miss Cora Tomasek at Jackson, Minn., and brought her to the farm where they began a very successful life. The union has been childless. They added many acres to their holdings and resided on the farm until last fall when they disposed of same and bought a residence in Pocahontas and moved there. One of the happiest moments of Mr. DeVauls life came when he had prospered sufficiently to repay the obligations incurred during his younger years when he was forced to take bankruptcy to escape financial ruin. He was under no legal obligation to do this. It was by good team work that Mr. and Mrs. DeVaul achieved their success. They used good management when necessary and shared both work and play, being constant companions in whatever was the order of the days. They toured most of the United States and parts of Mexico, South America and Europe together. They built a fine cottage in Borg's Park at Dunedin, Fla., where they spent their winters in recent years. It seems tragic to end such a happy union, but "Someday, some time, we'll understand." Mr. DeVaul was affiliated with the Eastern Star and Masonic lodges, claiming his membership at Plover, Ia. The Masons had charge of the services at the grave. In addition to his wife, Mr. DeVaul leaves two brothers, James DeVaul of Havelock and Frank DeVaul of Ames, and one sister, Mrs. H.B. Coombes of Canon City, Colo. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Among the relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H. Beals, Eagle Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Frank DeVaul, Ames; Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Livingston, Cedar Rapids; Dr. and Mrs. H.B. Coombes, Canon City, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Marion Bruce, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. McAtte, Emmetsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Stewart, Ames; Mr and Mrs. W.J. Johnson, West Bend; Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Anderson, Eagle Grove; Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Tomasek, Grinnell; Mrs. Fred Eberle, Ireton; Miss Mildred DeVaul, Ames, and Mrs. Manter, Cedar Rapids.
