James final illness was only a months duration and he was bedfast only a week. He was united in marriage to Leona Willey, who survives him, on Jan 19, 1896 at Pocahontas. He was a farmer all his life but had worked at well drilling with his brothers. He was active on the school board and in politics. James was raised as a Master Mason in 1895 and maintained his membership in Pilot Lodge at Fonda up to the time of his death. Mr and Mrs DeVaul were blessed with 7 children, five sons and 2 daughters: Dr Charles DeVaul Piedmont, CA; Art DeVaul, Rolfe; Mrs T.E. Foster, Detroit, MI; Mrs Art Levene, and Jess DeVaul, Havelock; and James DeVaul, Superior. One son, Abe died in 1935 and at the time of his death, he was county attorney. Besides his immediate family, he had 19 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs H.D. Combs of Rolfe.
