Ford Jay Hubbard, 91 years of age, of Elm Creek, Nebraska, died, on July 31, 2021, at Brookstone Gardens in Kearney, Nebraska. Ford was born in Holdrege in the back of a Ford car on December 15th, 1929, during a blizzard. He was born to Elihu and Ethel May (Purdy) Hubbard. He received his primary education and graduated from Holdrege High School. Following his education, Ford worked at: the Hotel Dale in Holdrege; The Holdrege Daily Citizen; Cornland Dressed Beef in Lexington, Nebraska; McCook Townhouse; and Kearney High School as a custodial/maintenance man. Ford enjoyed working part-time for Marshall Nurseries in Omaha, Nebraska, where he learned and enjoyed landscaping. Ford worked part-time after retirement at the Tejeda Middle School in San Antonio, Texas and enjoyed working at Target in San Antonio, handing out food samples and socializing with the customers. On April 25, 1953, Ford was united in marriage to Vera Maxine Fuller at the Presbyterian Church in Lexington, and to this union two children were born: Steven and Sue. The couple made their home in Lexington, Holdrege, & McCook. Ford enjoyed painting, sketching, wood-working and wood carving, cooking, gardening and landscaping, exercising, traveling, watching Husker sports, and playing card games and dominoes with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the National Guard from 1951-1957. He enjoyed working as a cook in the kitchen crew during his time in the service and travelling for training. Ford will be remembered for his out-going and loving personality and for the many lives he touched with his kindness, smile, and sense of humor. In addition to his parents and step-father, Albert Nelson, he was preceded in death by; his wife, Vera Hubbard; five sisters: Eunice Hubbard at birth; Laura Hubbard; Iantha Journey and her husband, John; Betty Swanson and her husband, Francis; Flossie Green and her husband, Keith; brother, Don Hubbard and his wife, Dorothy; brother-in-law, Lloyd Steinbrink; two nephews: Bruce Swanson; and Gary Hubbard. Ford is survived by; his children: Steven Hubbard and his wife, Kaylon of Kearney; Sue Underwood of Holdrege; seven grandchildren: Nigel York and her husband, Gregory of San Antonio; Levi Hubbard and his wife, Cheska of Elm Creek; Seth Hubbard and his wife, Rebecca of Axtell, Nebraska; Thadd Hubbard and his partner, Ashley of Kearney; Jazzmyn Martin and her husband, Tony of Elm Creek; Trev Hubbard of Kearney; David Underwood and his wife, Jessica of Rapid City, South Dakota; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, June Steinbrink of Holdrege; one brother, Delano Nelson of Holdrege; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends. There will be no visitation or memorial book signing the family is honoring Ford's wish for cremation. The Nelson Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of the arrangements.
