Mrs. Smith was born in Holly Springs, Surry County. Her parents were Caleb Franklin and Ida Elizabeth Haymore Cook. She graduated from Flat Rock High School, where she was a star basketball player. Read More	PILOT MOUNTAIN, NC ~ Mrs. Foye Elizabeth Cook Smith passed away at her home at Old Westfield Road, Pilot Mountain, on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006. Mrs. Smith was born in Holly Springs, Surry County. Her parents were Caleb Franklin and Ida Elizabeth Haymore Cook. She graduated from Flat Rock High School, where she was a star basketball player. At one time, she was the highest scorer in Surry County in women's basketball. Mrs. Smith was the president of the junior class at Flat Rock High School, where she delivered the welcoming speech for the Junior Banquet. She was known throughout her life for her speaking abilities and humor. Mrs. Smith graduated from Western Carolina Teachers' College, which is now known as Western Carolina University. There she achieved the second-highest grades in student teaching of her student class, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. Beginning her teaching career at Bannertown Elementary School in the Mount Airy City School System, she taught eight years in that system, also teaching at North Main Street School. Most of her teaching career was spent at Pilot Mountain School, where she taught first, second, and fourth grades as well as the eighth-grade reading program. Mrs. Smith retired from teaching in 1979. Her principal, Mr. Herman R. Griffin, praised her for her "excellent work and fine spirit of enthusiasm." Mrs. Smith taught for a total of 38 years in primary education. She was known for her unique style of teaching, incorporating singing and playing the ukulele and the autoharp as part of her lessons, and was a commanding storyteller. When it began to snow one school day, Mrs. Smith allowed students to go outside without coats to catch snowflakes in their mouths! They were then ready to return to the classroom. Mrs. Smith enjoyed life and was never afraid to speak out or to be herself. She enjoyed playing the piano and the ukulele and started her children, Wilson and Sherri Jo, in their first piano lessons. She studied guitar with Ken Bloom. Other interests of hers included shopping, gardening, the Pilot Mountain Auditorium Committee, dogs, cats and horses. She loved all animals, really. She enjoyed movies, eating out, and reading the Bible. She was member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pilot Mountain, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school, and sang in the choir. Her daughter, Sherri Smith Collins, is the keyboardist for the church at present. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Roland Wilson Smith Sr. of the home, and by her children Sherri Jo Smith Collins and son-in-law Paul Steven Collins of Pilot Mountain, and Roland Wilson Smith Jr. of the home. She has two grandchildren, Carrie Elizabeth Collins, a student at Surry Community College, and Daniel Joseph Collins, a student at N.C. State University. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Evon (Mrs. Joe) Cook of Holly Springs, and by a sister, Mrs. Ethel C. Flippin of Blacksburg, Va. She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Gilmer Flippin; a brother and sister-in-law, Dillard Samuel and Lucy Barnes Cook; by a brother, Joseph Franklin Cook; by a sister and two brothers-in-law Percy Irene Cook (Spencer Samuel and Robert Miller "Doc" Hundley); by a sister and two brothers-in-law Kate Cook Key Francis (Gilbert Key and Pat Francis); and by two infant twin sisters. A funeral service will be conducted for Mrs. Smith at 7 p.m. today, Nov. 2, at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Kristi Rolison, the Rev. Jesse Bledsoe, the Rev. Linda Blessing, and Mr. Paul Collins officiating. A committal service for Mrs. Smith will be held at Skyline Memory Gardens at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3. In lieu of flowers, memorials or donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church Music Fund/Pipe Organ Fund, P.O. Box 1209, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The family is being served by Howell-Nelson Funeral Service of Pilot Mountain. Mrs. Smith will be terribly, terribly missed by her family and friends, who will think often of her wit, charm, teaching, love of life, music and animals; vibrant faith, and her sweet smile, which could light up an entire room and our hearts.
