Carmel, Fleming county, Kentucky, November 17, 1808, being the oldest daughter of a family of seven children, all of whom are now dead, except one sister, Mrs. Syinda Anders of Leesburg, Highland county, Ohio. About 1830 she removed to Ross county, Ohio with her mother, brothers and sisters, her father having died, leaving the mother with a family of small children. Carmel, Fleming county, Kentucky, November 17, 1808, being the oldest daughter of a family of seven children, all of whom are now dead, except one sister, Mrs. Syinda Anders of Leesburg, Highland county, Ohio. About 1830 she removed to Ross county, Ohio with her mother, brothers and sisters, her father having died, leaving the mother with a family of small children. Soon after removing to Ohio, the family removed to Fayette county, where she was married February 12, 1835, to William I. Betzer, and removed again to Ross county, where all her children were born, the family removing in the fall of 1856 to DeWitt county, Illinois, where her husband died April 10, 1857. In 1869 she removed to Pella, Marion county, Iowa, where she resided until the fall of 1886, when she removed to Seward. Grandma Betzer was the mother of seven children, five sons and two daughters; James H., editor of "The Blade;" Enoch, residing near Staplehurst, this county; Mrs. Martha E. Jolley, of Adel, Iowa; Asad T., of Lincoln, Nebr.; Isaac Newton, who died in Andersonville Prison on August 17, 1864, during the rebellion; Mrs. Anna M. Bovee, of Washington county, Nebr.; and Alex H., editor of the David City "News." She was a typical specimen of the hardy pioneers of the mountain regions of the "dark and bloody ground," the family being noted for its robust health and powers of endurance. Her death was the result of complications growing out of an attack of la grippe. Since January last year her powerful constitution and strong will had been gradually giving way to the disease, and for nine weeks before the final summons came she required the constant attention of her children, and was never free from pain, most of the time of a very intense character. She longed to be at rest and was ready for the summons. At the age of fifteen years she was converted to Christianity. During her residence in Ohio she was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and after removing to Illinois she united with the M. E. church, of which she was a member until her death. After her children were married and all doing for themselves she preferred the quiet of her own home, and for many years lived alone surrounded by her children and she never seemed so happy as when they would visit her and partake with her of the bountiful stores she always had provided. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church Monday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. J. S. W. Dean officiating, after which her remains were laid to rest in the Greenwood cemetery.
