Born in Waterville July 28, 1908 at the home of her Uncle Fred and Aunt Martha Alexander, Frances was the first-born daughter of Washington Territorial pioneer homesteaders James Pattie and Kate Wolford Pattie. Frances grew up on her parents' homestead in Douglas County within sight of the Columbia River. She attended the Howard and Mud Springs Schools, graduating from Waterville High School, class of 1926. Following in the footsteps of her mother Kate, Aunt Fannie and grandmother Sarah Alexander Wolford, Frances set out to become a teacher, entering Cheney Normal School. Thus, elementary education became the career path she would follow for more than 30 years. During the heart of the depression and dust bowl years, Frances began her teaching career at Warden and like her mother before her, taught at a number of area schools. Although she held a lifetime certificate, to keep current with the latest educational methods, Frances attended summer school nearly every summer of her teaching career, taking on challenges ranging from "art for the elementary classroom," to "the new math," and "conservation education." On Nov. 25, 1932, Frances married Mansfield resident, Velmor Thomsen. Together, they raised two sons, Jim and Leroy, while operating a cattle and wheat ranch. Together, they shared the honor of Douglas County Cattleman of the Year in 1968. Frances and Velmor lived on the family ranch west of Mansfield until 1995, where each summer she cultivated an extensive vegetable and flower garden, preserving its harvest for her family and friends. In addition to the educational legacy she provided to her 5th and 6th grade students, Frances will long be remembered for the hospitality of her home, her bountiful meals and her passionate enthusiasm for growing things, which she bequeathed to her children and grandchildren. She had a quiet sense of humor, enjoyed her family, traveling and reading. Frances retired from Mansfield Schools after a 30-year teaching career in Douglas County schools. Her professional affiliations include the Washington Education Association. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an education honorary. She was a 50 year member of the Mansfield Grange #883, a member of the Mansfield Rebecca Lodge #281 and Past Noble Grand. Frances is survived by a son, V. Leroy Thomsen and daughter-in-law, Cindy Thomsen; grandson, Darel Thomsen, his wife, Kristi and great-granddaughter, Kailey; grandson, David Thomsen, his wife, Jeanne and her daughter, Justine; and grandson, Dallas Thomsen; daughter-in-law, Mary Thomsen, granddaughter, Beth Thomsen-Miracle, her husband, Charlie and great-grandson, James Addison; granddaughter, Debbie Thomsen-Koehnen, her husband, Mark and great-granddaughter, Fiona; granddaughter, Brooke Thomsen; sister, Marjorie Pattie McGrath, brother-in-law, Verdelle "Mac" McGrath, nephew, Don McGrath; sister-in-law, Doris James and niece, Sharon Haddenham Babinski. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Kate Pattie; husband, Velmor; son, John James (Jim); nephew, Michael McGrath and brother-in-law, Ivan James. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations, in her name, to the Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation, the Mansfield Community Scholarship Fund or the Mansfield Ambulance Fund. Funeral services for Frances Thomsen will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 9 at the Mansfield United Protestant Church with interment to follow in the Mansfield Cemetery.
