Frances was born on December 16, 1906 near S.W. 1st and Jackson in Topeka the daughter of John J. & Katherine Rhomberg Durkin. She resided in Topeka her entire life, attended Assumption Grade School, and is believed to have been the oldest living graduate of Topeka Catholic (Hayden) High School. She was also the longest tenured employee of Southwick Automotive having worked there for 55 years. Upon "retirement" she worked for many years as a volunteer in the Parish Offices of Assumption Catholic Church. She was an active member of the Daughters of Isabella, The St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, and many other Catholic ministries. Throughout her 100 years of life Frances lived out her deep devotion to the Catholic faith with expressions of love, generosity, kindness, and faithfulness (including faithfully sending birthday & anniversary cards to all of her beloved family members). Her prayers, sense of humor, sharp mind, & optimistic outlook will be missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Melchior; her sister, Dorothy Froelich; and daughter, Barbara Jean Geist. Survivors include her loving sister and best friend, Elizabeth Durkin, with whom she resided and worked with for most of her life. Other survivors include her son, Jerome Melchior (Martha); son-in-law Robert L. Geist; granddaughter, Kiersten Melchior; grandsons, Kevin Melchior, Joseph Geis (Kathleen), Michael Geist (Debbie), David Geist (Jill), and Paul Geist (Sharon); 13 great grandchildren, and 2 nieces and 2 nephews - who were especially close to her. Typical of her life of service to others, Frances donated her body for research to KU Medical Center. Therefore, funeral mass and burial will be at a later date. However, on November 17th, the family will greet friends beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Mater Dei's Assumption Catholic Church location, with a memorial Mass to follow at 1:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to Mater Dei/Assumption School and sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home 2801 SW Urish Rd Topeka KS 66614.
