She was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Leonard. She was baptized May 25, 1919 by the Rev. W. H. Welch. She was taken into membership of the Methodist Church June 8, 1928 by the Rev. E. J. Plummer. She was always in attendance at Sunday School and Church and was a member of the Home Guards and Queen Esthers. She served as pianist of the Sunday School and assistant pianist of the church and was always willing to do the solo work of the choir. Ione attended the Dayton public schools and graduated with the class of 1936, starting in her college work in the fall of 1936 at Iowa State College at Ames, which she attended for two years, using her voice as soloist in the Glee Club, and many times singing over W.O.I. broadcasting station. In the fall of 1938 she entered college at the Iowa University, Iowa City, Iowa, where she majored in Psychology, lacking only nine hours of receiving her B. A. degree. While here she met James E. Erricson, son of Mrs. Inez Erricson of Fort Dodge, and they were married Jan. 21, 1940 at Iowa City where they lived until July. They spent one year living in Wichita, Kansas. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, James E. Erricson, stationed somewhere in the Southwest Pacific, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Leonard, one sister, Alice Marie, and a host of other relatives and friends. At the age of three and one half years Ione contracted diabetes, and never was able to enjoy good health. Everything that medical skill and loving hands could do for her was done. Regardless of her poor health she was always interested in the welfare of others, trying in some way to brighten their lives and showing by her kind deeds her sunny disposition. During her twenty-two and one-half years of poor health she was always patient and never complained. Her funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home and at 2:30 o'clock from the Methodist church, conducted by her former pastor, the Rev. K.W.G. Hiller of Newell, Iowa, assisted by the Rev. A.G. Heddle. Her two favorite hymns, "Near the Cross" and "My Mother's Bible" were given as solos with Mrs. Pauline Swanson singing "My Mother's Bible" and Mr. Ralph Gunn "Near the Cross" accompanied on the organ by Mrs. A. A. Erickson. The pallbearers were Will Powers, Will Coomer, Everett Romig, Irvin Lundberg, Waldo Intermill and Sam Burnquist. Burial was in the family lot in Dayton cemetery with undertaker T. W. Swanson directing. The floral committee was Mrs. Van Gabrielson, Mrs. Ralph Gunn, Mrs. Ivan Slater, Mrs. Helen Enquist, Mrs. Vernard Stark and Mrs. Frank Norstrum.
