Mrs. Cassidy is survived by one daughter, Frances Anne Shanahan; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Monroe Kramer. Mr. Kramer was pharmacist for the McCrum's Drug Company on Main Street during the era from the early 1900's through World War I. She was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. James William Hazelwood and Mr. and Mrs. John Kramer. Mr. Hazelwood was Chief of Police in Lexington from 1902 until his death in 1908. Mr. Kramer emigrated from Prussia to the United States during the 1850's and served with the 27th Virginia Infantry (Stonewall Jackson's Brigade) during the Civil War, being paroled from Company H of that command at Appomatox when Lee's Army of Northern Virginia surrendered to Grant on 9 April 1865. During the night of 11 April, Grant's Quartermaster was printing parole forms for use on the following day, but they were not available when the first units of Lee's army mustered for parole on 12 April. The 27th Virginia Infantry was among the first units whose soldiers were paroled and Mr. Kremer (original spelling) received a handwritten parole, an item of exceptional rarity today, which his family has preserved. Mrs. Cassidy was a graduate of Lexington High School and was initially employed by the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Thereafter, she was Deputy Clerk in the office of the Rockbridge County Commissioner of Revenue. She retired from that office in 1974 and lived in Lexington until 1998, when she moved to Texas to live with her daughters. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 16, 1999, in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery with Rev. Mark Reuter officiating. Arrangements by the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.
