Soul being in charge with burial at the Monticello ceme- tery. Frances Monroe, the only son of Charles C. and Hannah J. Butler was born June 11, 1853 in Oswego county New York. At the age of two years he came with his parents to Iowa and settled in Cedar county where he was educated and grew to young manhood. In 1874 he was married to Naoma E. Bulbert. They established a home in Monticello where for a number of years Mr. Butler held the position of city en- gineer. To this union was born two sons and three daughters. His wife one son and one daughter preceded him in death. After five years a widower, Mr. Butler married Mrs. Sarah Stine of Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Butler passing away in 1911. Frank as he was familiary called was for many years was engaged in the saw- mill business in and around Hop- kinton. For the past several years he had been in the employ of the Iowa Electric company working at their plant in Hopkinton. This pos- ition he held until January 21, 1932 when he suffered a stroke of paraly- sis. Week by week he grew more helpless and was taken to Uni- versity hospital at Iowa City last Monday, April 4, where medical aid and skill and every care was given him, but to no avail. He grew steadily weaker until death released him from his earthly suffering last Thursday, April 7. Mr. Butler was an ardent lover of the outdoors. Of a kind and generious disposition, he made a lasting friend of all with whom he came in contact. He was grand dad to young and old, and his home on the banks of the river, which he loved, was the gathering place for relatives and friends who were always welcome. During his last illness he was tenderly cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Bessie E. Mc- Manus. He leaves to morn his passing his two daughters, Mrs. Mc- Manus of Hopkinton and Mrs. J.A. Schroeder of Maquoketa and a son Charles Raymond Butler of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one neph- ew, together with numerous other more distant relatives.
