Dead are Mrs. Frances Pauline Martin, 37, of Iola and Bruce C. Martin Sr., 58, of Moran. According to police, Martin shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself at the apartment where his estranged wife had been living for about two months. Mrs. Martin was dead when the officers arrived. Martin was still alive but unconscious, and he died a short time later at the Allen County Hospital. Acting Police Chief John Walters said the police received a call about 2:10 p. m. Saturday reporting that there had been a shooting above Maloney's Grocery Store at Kentucky and East Street. When the police arrived, a woman at the grocery said there was a man upstairs in an apartment who had shot Mrs. Martin and that the officers should get up there before he killed the children. The officers found Martin lying in a doorway with a gun beside him. The woman was found dead on the kitchen floor. From witnesses, Walters said he got the following story of the shooting: Shortly before 2 pm. Martin drove up beside the (Continued on Page 6, No. 4) apartment building on Kentucky Street and yelled to his wife who was near a window in the upstairs apartment. He said he wanted to talk with her, but she replied that they had nothing to talk about. Martin then went to the apartment and knocked on the door. When his wife opened it, he walked in pointing a gun at her. She backed to the kitchen door where Martin shot her and then threatened other people in the apartment. After ordering the children who were in the living room to go into a bedroom, Martin turned the gun on himself and shot himself twice in the chest. Six children had been playing records in the living room when Martin arrived, Walters said. They were the children of Earl Watson and Robert Watson and Mrs. Martin had been babysitting with them. With Mrs. Martin also were her daughter by a previous marriage, Bonnie Lou Culbertson, 19, and the children's grandmother, Mrs. Katie Watson of Lone Elm. They apparently witnessed the shooting from the kitchen. The gun found beside Martin's body was a .32 caliber revolver which it was learned he had bought Saturday morning at a local hardware store. The weapon contained six rounds, three of which had been fired. Martin, formerly of Chandler, Ariz., had been living at Moran recently. He was retired from the United States Air Force. A police check revealed that he has two daughters and an ex-wife now living in Arizona. Mrs. Martin had been living at the apartment over the Maloney Grocery Store for about two months since she was separated from her husband. She was born in Iola and had lived here nearly all her life. Her survivors include her father, John Watson of Iola; her mother, Mrs. Ned Goodale of Iola; and two daughters by previous marriage, Miss Culbertson and Mary Hill ot Iola. Funeral services for her will ben 10a.m. tomorrow at the Waugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Pentz officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
