Friday, January 16, 2004 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE. Francis E. DeRyke, 88 years of age, of Beatrice, NE. passed away at the Beatrice Community Hospital in Beatrice, NE. Friday night, January 9, 2004. He was born on June 2, 1915 near Firth, Nebraska and has lived in Beatrice, NE. since 1946. He married Irene Cookus on August 14, 1937 in Papillion, NE. He was a member of the C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corp) from 1935-1938 and was employed in shipyards in Portland, Oregon from 1942-1945. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, serving from July 7, 1945 until October 7, 1946. After her served in the U.S. Army he moved to Beatrice, NE. and worked construction work and then at the Dempsters Retail Store; and from 1951-1980 he was employed by Minnegasco. He was a life member of the Bitting-Norman Post # 27, American Legion in Beatrice, NE. Survivors include his daughter Lois Vandegrift and her husband Ronald of Beatrice, NE.; 3 grandchildren, Darcy Vandegrift of Lawrence, KS, Bryan Vandegrift of Samamish, Washington and Kenneth Vandegrift of Manassas, Virginia; 1 great grandson; several nieces and nephews; and 2 sisters in law, Neva DeRyke of Milan, Missouri and Josephine DeRyke of Lincoln, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Lulu (Young) DeRyke; his wife Irene (1984); brothers Jack, James, Daniel, Glenn, Laban, George and Louis DeRyke; and sister Elizabeth Colgrove. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 16, 2004 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE. with Reverend William Jurgens officiating. Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice, NE. Military graveside services will be provided by Bitting-Norman Post # 21, American Legion in Beatrice, NE. There will be no viewing. A register book will be available at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice 9:00-5:00 on Tuesday-Thursday and Friday until the time of the service. A memorial has been established with the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to [email protected] They will be forwarded to the family. The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice is in charge of the services.
