Layton had passed away at St. Francis hospital at Grand Island, his death coming as quite a shock as reports from his bedside had been very favorable. His son Cecil had been visiting him that afternoon and had left him at 4:30 at which time he talked with Cecil and was in better spirits than he had been at any time since his operation. Death came from a sudden heart attack. Francis Edward Layton, better known to his many friends as Frank Layton, was born at Francesville, Pulaski county, Indiana, on April 8, 1866 and died at St. Francis hospital at Grand Island, Neb. on May 26, 1938 at the age of 72 years, one month and 18 days. He lived in Indiana until the fall of 1885 when he moved to Malcolm, Neb. where he remained for about a year before coming to Silver Creek in October 1886 where he made his home until his death, with the exception of one year spent in Fullerton, Nebr., and nine years spent in Boyd county, Nebraska. On November 30, 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Laton of Malcolm and to this union four children were born, three sons and one daughter. One son, Harry, died in infancy. Mrs. Layton passed away in September 1900, leaving Mr. Layton with three small children, Cecil, Charles and Etta. On October 10, 1901 he was united in marriage with Miss Celia L. Dwyer and they made their home at Silver Creek until the year 1919 when they moved to Boyd county to farm, returning to Silver Creek in the 1938. Mrs. Celia Layton passed away in August, 1937 and his daughter Etta died in February 1932, leaving as his survivors his two sons, Charles of Eagle Pass, Texas and Cecil of Silver Creek; five grandchildren, Robert Layton of Sabinal, Texas; Carolyn Layton of San Antonio, Texas; Francis and George Layton, and Harold Hahn of Silver Creek. He also leaves his step-father, J. M. Graves of Silver Creek; two half-sisters, Mrs. Olive Lauder and Mrs. Robert Murray of Silver Creek; three half brothers, W.A. Graves of Oakdale, Neb., C.C. Graves of Camden, Ind., and H.J. Graves of Los Angeles, Calif., besides a number of nephews and nieces. Besides bringing up his own children he also had his two grandchildren with him. Robert Layton lived with him from the time he was nine years old until he graduated from high school, and Harold Hahn lived with him since infancy. During his more than forty years of residence in Silver Creek Mr. Layton was in business for himself or as a clerk most of the time, and took an active part in the upbuilding of the community. He served as a member of the village board for several years and always took an active part in any movement which he considered was for the best interest of the town. Charity was his middle name, and so long as it was within his power no man, woman or child in the community who needed a helping hand failed to receive it when the matter was brought to Mr. Layton's attention. Fraternally he had been associated with the Odd Fellows and Modern Woodmen for many years, always taking an active part in both of the organizations, and holding many official positions in them, having been secretary of the Woodmen at the time of his death. A friend of all who knew him, Frank Layton will be missed by those who have known him as a part of our community during the most of the past fifty-one years. Prior to the time he moved to Boyd county Mr. Layton had been affiliated with the Silver Creek Congregational church and continued a member of that organization while in Boyd county, but on his return to Silver Creek had been a member of the M.E. Church. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, a short service being held at the Lauder home after which the body was taken to the M.E. church where a large number of friends and relatives had gathered to pay their last respects. Rev. Harris preached the funeral sermon. Burial services at the Silver Creek cemetery were conducted by the Odd Fellows. Pall bearers were Walter Cremeen, James Regan, Gifford Hutchison, Thos. Meacham, Roy Frizzell and Dyo Davis. Relatives and friends from a distance who were here to attend the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Graves and son Billy of Oakdale; Francis Layton of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell of Schuyler; Mr. and Mrs. U.F. Clark, Wayne Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bivens and Mr. and Mrs. Kasson Dolph of Clarks; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Potter of Albion; Mr. and Mrs. H.
