(He must have immigrated to the U.S. between 1813 and 1839). ------------------------------------ "ALL" of the census records for his wife Julia Ann (Frame) Hunniker, show that Julia was born in Ohio. -------------------------------------- Frank moved his family from South Bend, Portage Twp., St. Joseph Co. Indiana to the village of Buchanan, in Berrien County Michigan between 1853 and 1860. ------------------------------------- Frank's occupation was a butcher, in a retail meat market (per census records), and he is also listed in the "1860 State of Michigan Gazeteer" as "F. Honiker, butcher". ------------------------------------- They had six or seven children. (They are listed on the memorial for his wife Julia Ann Hunniker). ------------------------------------- His daughter Sarah Ellen Hunniker (who married Isaac Brown) named her son Frank, after her father. ----------------------------------- On his daughter Henrietta (Hunniker) Evans death certificate, in 1917, the "informant" is listed as Mary Hunniker, dressmaker, of Newark, New Jersey. Mary was the daughter of John Hunniker, born in Abendorf, Germany and his wife Sophia Hunniker, born in Baden, Germany. They must have been relatives. Could John Hunniker have been Frank's brother? In the 1880 census, Mary Hunniker and her parents were living in Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey. ------------------------------------ After Frank's wife Julia died in 1877, he lived for some time (in the 1880 census) with his daughter Henrietta "Nettie" (Hunniker) Evans and her husband George Evans, at 214 Oak Hill Dr., Jackson, Michigan (in Rives Township, Jackson County). (Henrietta signed her name with this address in her niece Cleta ("Cleo") Dragoo's autograph book). Note: Frank's son Frank Jr., also lived in Rives Twp. Jackson Co. MI. ------------------------------------ The "Berrien County Record" newspaper in Buchanan, Michigan, on April 26, 1877, states: ---- In the notice of the death of Mrs. Hunniker, last week, we should have said, the wife of Frank Hunniker instead of Jacob. --------------------------------- The "South Bend Daily Tribune" newspaper in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday April 28, 1877, Page 4, Column 1, states: --- The wife of Frank Hunniker, formerly of this city, died in Buchanan last week. --- Note: Oak Ridge Cemetery records of lot purchases, show that Frank Hunniker paid for a lot in Section 20, Lot 19, in 1877 (the year of Julia's death). --------------------------------- The "Berrien County Record" newspaper in Buchanan, Michigan, on Thursday May 26, 1881 states: --- Mr. Frank Honiker [Hunniker], an old resident of this place, later of Jackson, Mich., died at the residence of Mr. Isaac Brown, his son-in-law, in this place [Buchanan] yesterday morning, aged 69 years. -------------------------------- Note: It "should" have said, aged 68 years (and 2 or 7 months). -------------------------------- Note: Isaac Brown of Buchanan, MI, was the husband of Frank's daughter Sarah Ellen. (After Sarah died, Isaac married for the second time, to another woman who was also named Sarah Ellen). ------------------------------------ Frank and Julia share a tall, narrow headstone that is about three foot tall, with "HUNNIKER" clearly spelled across the bottom. One side reads: JULIA A. Wife of F. HUNNIKER DIED April 13, 1877 AE (64?) yrs. The other side reads: FRANK HUNNIKER DIED May 25, 1881 AE 68 year's & (7 or 2) mos. ---------------------------------- Next to the tall headstone, are three small identical headstones. One says Frank, one says Julia A., and one says Celia. Celia is not listed on any census. Could she have been a daughter who died in infancy, or at a young age? ------------------------------------- Note: The earlier census' list him as Francis Sr. and his only son as Francis Jr. About the time his son was old enough to attend school, he was listed as Frank Sr. and his son as Frank Jr., then as Franklin, and later, as Benjamin. (Francis is a common name for a male in Europe, but is considered more of a female name in the U.S.). His son Francis "Frank" Jr., must have changed the spelling of his surname. On his son's death certificate and on his son's headstone in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater, MI, his son is listed as Frank B. "Honniker" spelled with an "O", and Frank Jr.'s death certificate gives his father's name as "Ben Francis Honniker". ------------------------------------- The 1840 census lists him as "Francis Huniker" [Sr.], living in St. Joseph County Indiana. ------------------------------------ The 1850 census lists him as "Francis Honniker [Sr.]" and his son as Francis Honniker [Jr.], living in [South Bend] Portage Twp. St. Joseph County Indiana. -------------------------------------- The 1860 census lists him as "Frank Huniker [Sr.]" and his son as Franklin, living in the village of Buchanan, Michigan. -------------------------------------- The 1870 census lists him as "Francis Haniker [Sr.]", and his son as Benjamin, living in the village of Buchanan, Michigan. -------------------------------------- The 1880 census lists him as "Frank Honniker [Sr.]", living with his daughter Henrietta Evans and son-in law George Evans, in [Jackson], Rives Township, Jackson County Michigan. ------------------------------------ On the 1881 Buchanan Twp., Berrien County Michigan "Return of Deaths", he is listed as: "Frank Hunniker", widower, died at the age of 68 years and 2 months, in Buchanan, Michigan. ------------------------------------- On daughter Henreitta's marriage certificate in 1866, her maiden name is listed as "Honiker". ------------------------------ On daughter Celestia's death certificate in 1916, (from Lansing, MI) he is listed as "Frank Honniker". -------------------------------- On daughter Celestia's 1916 "Return of Deaths", from Buchanan, MI., Celestia's father is listed as "Frank Hunniker". ------------------------------ On daughter Henrietta's death certificate in 1917, he is listed as "Frank Huniker". ---------------------------- On his son's death certificate in 1931, Frank Sr. is listed as "Ben Francis Honniker". -------------------------- [Could Frank Sr. have been born in Wurttemberg, Germany as "Benjamin Francis Hunniker"?] [In Germany, they commonly went by their second given name]. ------------------------------------ His headstone clearly reads: FRANK HUNNIKER ------------------------------------ Note: See additional photos of their headstone on the memorial for his wife Julia Ann Hunniker. ------------------------------------ Note: A burial record, found by Nancy Heib in an old safe (with the door broken off), in the Sextons house/office in Oak Ridge Cemetery, states that Frank Hunniker Sr. was buried in a "brick" box. -------------------------------------- His wife Julia Ann, and their daughters Celestia A. (Hunniker) Dragoo, and Henrietta (Hunniker) Evans are also buried in this cemetery. ---------------------------------- In the obituary for his son-in-law Isaac Brown, it states that Isaac was buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. The cemetery had no record of his burial. Could Isaac's first wife Sarah Ellen Hunniker have been buried there with Isaac also?
