Read More	Bates, Francis Marion 1862-1936 FRANK M. BATES SR., DIED MONDAY NEAR SCIOLA, FUNERAL WEDNESDAY Funeral services for Frank M. Bates, Sr., for the last 43 years a farmer two miles northeast of Sciola, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church at Sciola, with Rev. W. F. Clayburg, pastor of the the Methodist Church of Villisca in charge. Burial was in the Villisca Cemetery. Mr. Bates died at 4:30 p.m. Monday at his home after a short illness which confined him to his bed. He suffered a stroke of paralysis Saturday afternoon which resulted in his death on Monday. The body was brought to the Eno & Sutphen Funeral Parlors in Villisca, Monday where it was prepared for burial and later was returned to the home to await the last rites. Singers at the last rites Wednesday were Willis Larson, C. C. Anderson Mrs. Dick Kelley, and Miss Doris Carper, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Ralph Gourley. Pall bearers were C. T. Thompson, Albert Figgins, W. E. Figgins, C. J. Enarson, A. H. Hallam, and J. M. Bolt. Mr. Bates was born October 1, 1862, in Ohio and he came to Albia, Iowa, when still a small boy. A later move took him to a farm near Red Oak in which vicinity he grew to manhood. He was married September 28, 1885 at Plattsmouth, Nebraska to Clara Dorn and to them were born three children, Frank, Roy, and Mrs. Orlo Anderson, all of whom live in the vicinity of Villisca. Following their wedding at Plattsmouth, Mr. and Mrs. Bates began housekeeping on a farm near Elmwood, Nebraska, from where they moved to the Villisca vicinity in 1892. They had resided for the last 43 years on the Hobson farm and only last September celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Besides his widow and three children, Mr. Bates leaves four granddaughters and three grandsons. He was preceded in death by his only sister, Mrs. Marion Doan.
