Description	:	MRS. CLARA BATES DIES AT AGE OF 71 Funeral services were held Saturday at the Sutphen Funeral Home for Mrs. Clara Bates, 71, who died Tuesday in Dr. J. Clark Cooper’s hospital rooms. Burial was made in the Villisca Cemetery. Mrs. Harold Peters was in charge of the services and pall bearers were W. E. Figgins, Clint Powers, John Zuber Sr., Dick Kelley, William Miller, and Ralph Gourley. Music was furnished by Mrs. Dick Kelley and Mrs. Ray Retland, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Ralph Gourley. Clara, youngest daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Doan was born on a farm near Red Oak, Iowa, April 1, 1869 and spent all of her girlhood in Montgomery County. On September 28, 1885 she was married to Frank M. Bates at Plattsmouth, Nebraska and they spent the first eight years of their married life near Elmwood, Nebraska. To this union were born three children, who survive their mother. They are Frank M. Jr., and Mrs. Dolly Anderson of near Villisca, and Roy of Norwich, Iowa. Her husband died in 1936. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, a twin brother, Edgar Doan of Cove Arkansas and a foster daughter, Mrs. May Shoemaker of Alma, Washington. In 1894 the Bates family moved form Nebraska to Montgomery County to their fam east of School, where for 47 yers they resided. Mrs. Bates was a member of the Holmes Chapel Methodist Church. All of the children and grandchildren were present at the funeral, except for the oldest grandson, Marion Bates oof San Diego, California.
