Apparently in the best if health, his death was unexpected, coming as a shock to his family and friends. He was born in Canton Solothurn, Switzerland Jan 6, 1846, son of Elizabeth (Stempfly) Aerni. There he attended school and as a young man learned the art of cheese making, becoming skilled in that work for which the country is famous. He served his time in the Swiss army and continued a resident of his native land until the age of 38, when he came to the states, in 1884. Coming directly to Platte county he was employed as a farm hand for three years, during which time he saved his earnings and later engaged in on 160 acres of land which he rented and farmed six years. Investing in property he became owner of 320 acres of land which he farmed for 18 years. Later selling this half section, he purchased land in Columbus township, four miles northeast of here, where he has resided since. In 1870 Mr. Aerni married Miss Magdalena Christian, who died in 1879, leaving 6 children, Mrs J. H. Lannan of Columbus, Frank and Albert Aerni, both of Columbus, Mrs Edward Eiseman of Creston and Miss Freda Aerni of West Point. A daughter Miss Elizabeth, died nine years ago today. His second marriage was to Miss Rosina Egger, who died June 23, 1912. Four children were born to them: Arthur Aerni of Columbus, Jacob Aerni of Bismark township, and Dr. Clara A. Aerni of Hastings. A daughter Mrs. Emma Gotel, died some years ago. On Sept. 19, 1913, he married Miss Marie Schacher, who survives. He leaves also 39 grandchildren and 13 great gandchildren. He was a member of the German Lutheran church and took an active part in community and church activities. Funeral arrangements will be made Monday. The body is at the Gass Funeral Home.
